Whites 5.3 or 4x6 shooter coil?

Treasurechic

Well-known member
I own an M-6 and already have the 6x10 DD but need a smaller coil for "trashy sites" I live in N.H. and the soil can get to be very diverse from one site to the next as well, so my question is which one of these coils would be best all around for coin and relic hunting in these different situations? I do not plan on doing any gold hunting( besides rings!) Money is tight these days and I want to choose wisely (Thats if Winter here ever ends, talk about cabin fever!!!)

I have an MXT, and all three of the coils you mentioned. I use the 4x6 the least, and the 5.3 the most.

In my estimation, the 6x10 and 5.3 are roughly equal in depth, coverage, and accuracy of VDI and depth readouts. It is really a toss-up between the two in situations such as you describe.

The little 4x6 is really a specailty coil, and I only use mine in EXTREME trash, such as an area around a picnic table that's littered with hundreds of pulltabs and shards of cans. I recently got a Classic ID, and this detector gets that action now! It tunes out the trash very well.

Since you already have the 6x10, just use it for now. When you get into the garbage, turn down the gain a click and go veeery slow. Later on, in a year or so, cash in the clad and put it towards a used coil. Anyway, that's how I got all my coils.

There has been alot of debate about the Excellerator coils being the best choice. I have not used these, but they might be worth looking at. Personally, I am happy with my Eclipse selection.

I wouldn't sweat what you don't have, and enjoy the coil you do own. It is probably the most versatile of the three.

Boy can I relate to the money issue, and that is why it is important to shop around for a good coil. The 4x6 is a great little coil for working trashy areas, like playgrounds, schools, etc., but when you get out in to the open areas its slow going because of its size. My wife and I started out with the 4x6 but we wanted something that would work in these trashy areas but have a bigger foot print. Although the 6x10 is ok in trashy areas it suffers from its size and target seperation is lacking compared to a smaller coil. Both my wife and I now use the 4.5x7 DD Excelerator and the 6" DD Excelerator coils for working in trashy and not so trashy areas. My wife never takes her 4.5x7 Excelerator coil off her detector no matter where we are hunting, while I use a number of coils including the White's 6x10, the 8" and 10x14 DD Excelerator coils. Check this forums classifieds as sometimes you can find one for sale. Good luck finding a coil that fits your needs. HH Dennis in Idaho

So as far as a smaller coil for trashy sites this would be the most practical?

When hunting the trashiest areas of trashy sites i want the smallest coil i can get and so far the 5"EXcelerator is the smallest available for the M6. I wish they had a 4" round EXcelerator. In moderate trash most of the smaller coils are fine but i do prefer the 4.5"x7" EXcelerator vs the 5.3 Eclipse yet i feel the 5.3 Bullseye is best on the the 6.59 kHz detectors. Go figure  HH Bill

Thanks for your info, you among others have helped me decide on which is best for my hunting style and I very glad I joined this forum! Thanks again!!

Well I have the 4X6, 5.3 and 6X10. In heavy trash the 4X6 beats anything I've ever used, bar none. The 5.3 is good and the 6X10 is fair (trash wise) they're all considerably better than the stock 9.5. Personally, I could get along quite well with just the 4X6 and the 6X10. I know a lot of posters prefer the 5.3 over the 4X6, but in my experience in heavy trash the 4X6 is a clearly superior in separation. So, if really trashy areas are the problem, I would go with the 4X6.

Very wise advice indeed!, I was unaware of the 4.5x6 excellerator coil by Kellyco it seems to be a poppular choice, yet when I checked the price it is the most expensive. So far the 5.3 is in 1st place as far as choice, price and practical use.The 4x6 shooter seems to be the least poppular. I intend to find either a 5.3 used or the 4.5x7 used to save $$$$ I will shop a little and be patient as the ground is covered in a foot of snow here in N.H.still and is frozen solid!

and I'll give you the Findmall denizen discount

Why did you get the 6" Excelerator coil vs. the 5"? Also, do you use the 8" as a "stock" coil for general hunting?
Thanks much.

If you could only purchase one coil, in addition to the stock 9.5" coil that comes with the MXT, would you get the 4.5 x 7"or 5" Excelerator coil? I have heard the the 5" coil is not as noisy around pipes, metal, etc. I'm looking for a coil w/ good separation & decent depth in trashy areas (picnic areas, playgrounds, campgrounds, etc.)
Thank you.

As a very satisfied hunter with the 4X6 shooter I'm jumping back in to point out that the 5.3 which is basically a 6" coil doesn't cover as much more area when sweeping as some imply. The little shooter does cover about 6" in the one dimension as well, but less from side to side, that's one reason it is superior in heavy trash. It may sacrifice a bit of depth, but in my experience (I have the 5.3 also) it is very clearly superior in extreme trash. When hunting in these conditions, one shouldn't try to cover a lot of ground in a short order anyway. As frustrating as it can be, the small coil also forces one to hunt more slowly which is actually a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash the 5.3 as it is a good coil, just pointing out in my experience if extreme trash is the problem, the 4X6 has a clear edge in my opinion. Whatever that's worth. LOL
Cheers and HH

Hi Barber Bill,

You are talking about the 4"x 6" Eclipse Shooter vs the 4"x 6" Blue Max aren't you  Just curious because i do prefer the DD coils on the M6 at my sites and most likely the MXT and DFX are similar. I don't have the 4"x 6" Eclipse Shooter as i sold it along with a DFX a while back but the smaller EXcelerator coils are doing very well. I may add the concentrics rule on the 6.59 kHz detectors and found the 4"x 6"Blue Max provided very poor performance in target depth and sensitivity vs the 5.3 Black Max or 350 Snooper on 4 different detectors. Yes, the 4X6 DD "shooter". Been very good for me. I've read elsewhere that the combination you mentioned wasn't all it could be.

How about this. The 4X6 routinely picks up coins up to five inces deep with a strong signal and VDI and six inches with a decent signal and VDI. I have pulled a dime at the full lenth of a Lesche blade, 7" but I would say that was an exception although it did VDI as a dime. Has not happened since. I think the 4X6 gives very good depth for a trash picker. With that being said, the ground around here is fairly mild.
