Whites 5.3 coil on IDX

Just scored a few coils from an XLT purchase....I got the 5.3 coil....Yes..... Been wanting this coil for sometime on my IDX....I was surprised it hit most of my coins in my test garden. Hope real world digs are the same. It's a tad less deep then the 9.5 dounut coil....which I just love....the big coil does cover more ground faster. However I'm hoping to unmask some old colonial loot ! My plan is to tear up around some of my trashy colonial sites. On another note note....the XLT I got is pretty darn clean. Just the screen needs fixing, has the bars running across it. I called Whites and they won't send out a screen, I have to send it to them to fix....I kinda like to keep it but....well I don't know....maybe I will sell it or trade it ? I just like my IDX so much works really well for the type of digs I do...my only complaint is I wish it was hotter on gold/ nickel signals...I did fix that alittle by running the black sand switch on and the disk at around 8 o'clock....seems to hit deeper on those signals ....but then you open up iron signals on the audio and VDI....Bingo ! Still loving the analog machines...don't get me wrong there are a few digis I like....but that's a whole mother blaber mouth for me !

Hope to hit some spots this weekend....dang new Hampshire and mother nature are being Jerks with the weather /

Hello JJ

How well ground balanced is the IDX after changing coils? I'm just curious because the only time I had to make an adjustment was after changing coils.

I like to have my GB adjusted slightly positive when checking in the all metal mode. The 5.3 Black Max is a dynamite coil in the iron, the Blue Max 350 (4½") coil is a little better when the iron nails gets heavy, just a wee bit shallower coil.

What is it with the IDX Pro that makes it a little bit special ?? is it the discrimination side of the detector or just reasonably good at everything that it does, some machines seem to have that extra little bit of magic and the IDX seems to be one of these detectors.Hence this the reason i bought one but as yet due to having building work done on the house have not added many hours to the IDX use time, but over the next week or so the usage time will increase.

I think they are special because at the time they introduced the Classic models, most of White's offerings at the time were 4 filter faster sweep machine ( 5900,6000, XL Pro XLT etc). The Classic is a 2 filter fast recovery slow sweep machine. The reason they do so well in iron dense sites.

Gregg, thanks for that info, like your ghost town adventures with Monte,my IDX Pro will be used on really trashy roman/saxon sites especially the roman sites that are littered with hob nails from the roman hob nail boots that they use to wear,i have only used the stock 950 coil as yet so next time out later today i will use the 5.3 coil and give that a try.

So am i right in saying from your post to get maximum discrimination advantage its best to swing the detector slowly to take full advantage of the 2 filter setup ??

It requires a slow sweep. Start sweeping over a coin fast and the machine will start losing the coin. The 5.3 and a slow methodical sweep will pick the goodies out of the junk. I ran mine at full gain and just enough disc to just knock out a nail. The only other thing to remember is leave the freq adjust knob in the preset setting. Unless you have the Mod for GB, if you change the freq adjust knob it will effect your ground balance ie: if you change it then you need to reground balance ( which can be easily done if you have the GB mod.) If you don't have the mods just make sure you leave it in the preset setting. ( geez I sound like Monte, but that's were I learned it )

Sounds like a good strategy there jj...i dont have or have ever used an idx but i do have a 5900 and can relate to so much of what you say... my 5900 is very good on tiny gold.. when hunting in areas that i know tiny gold jewelry has been lost i run my disc just high enough to disc out bobby pins and dig anything that sounds good or moves the meter... when targets dry up i tinker with the ground balance and somehow manage to sniff out a few more, for some reason i sometimes get better results running ground balance way negative, no idea why? Good luck with the 5.3 ,i know on the 5900 it still gets good depth...hope to see some results soon....

I did score 1883 Indian around a bunch of iron nails on the outskirts of an old home foundation. Love the slow sweep speed of the IDX. And the 5.3 gets pretty good depth... With all the pine trees and hardwoods dropping there needles and leaves.... Signals tend to get deep fast, working around 200+ year old homestead that's long gone. I did hit a few other old holes that me and a few others hit hard...and just finding something non ferrous is always good.....however I could not squeak anything eles out 5.3 the other day.

Well that's certainly a step in right direction. .. i hunt a spot simular that ive hunted many many times.... sometimes i find old stuff ,sometimes newer stuff and sometimes nothing worth keeping... if you do any park hunting for clad and jewelry the 5.3 is the way to go...i prefer it over over the 9.5 for parks.... happy hunting. .. and thanks for the update...

Just bought a brand new 5.3 coil for the IDX Pro from across the pond including postage for less than i could buy one 2nd hand over here in the UK,as the price falls just under the threshold for Import duty it made the deal even sweeter, these coils are rarer than 'rocking horse manure' so very pleased too find such a bargain.

The IDX Pro with the stock coil and 5.3 should suit my trashy sites and also the smaller coil will be well suited to when harvest time comes and the stubble is still pretty stiff and the only coil that you can basically use is a small round coil that wont snag on the wheat/barley stalks.

Was out over the weekend with the IDX and its a real joy to use, still looking at getting the GB mod done, but will try 1st and see if its needed, but if it gives a slight increase in depth with no down sides then it must be the way forward with this rig.
