Posted these questions in Whites forum but, does anyone know of any mods possible to this model to allow the use of the Blue Max line of coils??
Also My research so far states that there's no circuit for an analog meter, is it possible to add it on a separate board? I'm not a electronics guru so I'm asking the experts here. Any other mods for this model possible or send it in for a tune and be happy?

I think it would save you time and money to think about the models suggested under your original post "Decent older models". These already have a meter and use the modern and readily available Blue Max and Black Max coils. If your 4900 works good, maybe you cound get along fine with that. Just love the one you're with.

I guess u have the _next to last -model of 4900 models. I don't know why u couldn't use a black max coil, beings it doesn't have a needle (4900) it would just maybe target off center? on a coin?.I have used different coils on different whites and still been able to adjust to those coils.I even use an older whites 4in coil on a classic 3 that uses a bm coil. It works fine and even has some notch effect and SEES thru nails and trash for coins rather well (I believe this is a hidden feature ) as whites has a problem with see-thru when trash is close to a coil on them.they blank out.I even use the 4in head on an mxt too (14hz) it just reads a little off but if u learn the numbers its a killer in bad-bad trash I had 2 4in ers and sold one and have a new one left in my junk box that I will NEVER get rid of as I said its a killer in trash.U can even use a 4in Bounty hunter on them with a change over cord.Been detecting 40 yr this april and find that some coils can be used in different applications and detectors as Bounty Hunter and whites and older teknetics coils can all be used on each other with an adapter coil.Making coils available. I even use a 25in whites for cache hunting that is fairly deep, but then a Pulse is applicable for those depts.

Just an add on. The different coil configurations that whites has DOES make a difference in whites machines for different applications (looking for coins-relic hunting- cache hunting). Co-ax, concentric or DD heads make a difference when hunting coins especially.U can get closer to coins in trash better with different wound coils of equal size from whites.
