White"s Dual Field - Delay

Furious T

Active member
Hi All,
I just bought a PI Dual Field, and had my first chance to use it a couple of days ago. The saltwater beach I was detecting has a lot of black sand, and conditions in the surf were rough...I have used my other Pi at the same spot and it has difficulty handling the black sand being tossed around in the water. I remembered reading one of Clive's tips with the dual field in black sand, and turned on the Delay and only moved the control knob a smidgin. The threshold settled down really well, and many of the targets I dug were quite deep. I was detecting at the water's edge, so depth of water was between 1" and 24". I had the Gain set at just past the pre-set mark, and threshold just audible. Seemed to work very well. Thanks Clive!

Furious i have Clives book also and will try the settings at the ocean??? Thanks, Mickfin

Mickfin, you're welcome....recently was at a different beach. This is one I tried hunting years ago with a vlf...the said on this beach is virtually red, with black sand where the iron has oxidised, so not really uer-friendly to md's.
The DF was very unsettled in it's threshold, so after a while I turned down the gain a bit, and stated getting more and deeper coins... was hunting on "dry" sand which was wet because it had been raining and was raining intermittently while I was detecting...so turning down the gain in the tough conditions does actaully enable the detector to get deeper...I initially tried settling down the gain with the delay control, but I felt I had the delay to high, so I turned it back down very low and reduced the gain a little below the preset arrow...seemed to work fine. Good luck with your ocean hunting.

Thanks Furious you are right about the Gain too mutch will reflect back in Hot Ground, Its Like Hi beams in the Fog, By backing off on the Gain you will get more Depth?? Mickfin

When I was experimenting with the delay on my DF, it lost about half of it's depth immediately just by turning the knob clockwiwise off of the click position.
