White Classic I SL

Ranger1

New member
Hello from Georgia. I have a Classic I SL in mint condition that the wife bought me about 15 years ago with only about 2 hours of use. I finally have the time to do a little MDing and I am planning on purchasing a newer unit and giving the Classic to my 16 yearold daughter. I would like to know what you think and if the Classic is suitable for her to use here in Georgia or do I need to look at purchasing her a new one also. We will mostly be digging for coins, jewelry, relics and junk of course.

Ken, I am always encountering a 'need' to come up with a spare detector at times for a friend (I do have a few), a grand-child (I have 19 of them now), or just as a loaner unit. Back in the mid-'70s I had a White's mini-Master TR model that I fit to a shorter length so they could hang it over their shoulder and still work the rod and coil. Monte Jr. would have been about to turn 6 and Sandra was 4

Monte, with 19 grandkids you must be a busy man. I do wish that had a little time back then, but my daughter has played travel softball for the last 12-1/2 years and we have travelled the southeast 3 to 4 weekends out of every month and I wouldn't trade it for anything. She has recently decided not to play anymore to focus on getting ready for college so we have alot of time on our hands. As far as her interest goes we went out to an old garden spot that my dad used to plant and the first find was a 1963 penny which is the year I was born. I haven't seen the penny since so I think her imagination started running wild as to what else there is out there. Who would have ever thought that a 1963 penny would fire her interest. Not sure what I am going to purchase yet, but have been researching the last couple of weeks. Seems like there are good and bad opinions about every model. Both of the local dealers who are hunters themselves have suggested the Garrett ACE 250 or 350 for what we will be looking for and in the price range I need to stay in especially if I have to purchase 2 of them. They sell all different brands, but still suggest these two models even with other brands in the same price range or higher priced ones. The only thing I am really concerned with is those two and alot of other models do not have manual or automatic ground balancing which a rep at KellyCo advised I needed for the soil in GA, but that added an additional $300 to the price. He suggested the X Terra 305 or the Fisher F4. Just not sure if the ground balancing on any model is worth the extra $300. I will always keep the Classic for a backup or loaner so I guess we will have to find out its limitations. Thanks for the info Monte.

Too old to be 'busy' anymore, but I know my kids have been. :) Yes, when I get to be around them we can have a good time but most of them live out-of-state. Actually, we count both those on my side and my wife's side as she had three children when we married and I have 6. Of the 19 grandkids, 4 are on her side and the rest are from my children, but only 3 of mine live here in Oregon. The rest live in Utah, so visits are not that frequent.

Well, 12

Thanks for all the info. I have been researching the M6 today and it looks like a good one also. A used one would be fine with me, but there's not to many available. I will keep looking. Thanks again.
