While watching TV I Watched in utter frustration...

as they filmed a guy detecting one of our local parks. This guy claimed to have years of experience but didn't have the remotest clue as to how to pinpoint or center a target and he never used the pinpoint button. He was using a Compass Coin Scanner which has a deadly pinpoint on it.

When he came upon a target he would run the coil backwards and forwards without ever even centering the coin, then he would start probing with a screwdriver. He took every bit of 15 minutes to locate a coin that was just under the grass. I was about to pull my hair out watching this guy. He was clean and dug no holes nor left any messes. I wonder how many more out there are like that - alleged years of experience without having learned even the basics. I wonder if this guy thought that pinpoint button was just decoration.

the Catholic churches here because of the trespassers that dig and leave holes. Be grateful that the Bozzo didn't leave holes on camera. The Metro parks are not supposed to allow MD'ing but the park rangers look the other way if you fill your holes. The few sure can mess it up for the crowd of good guys. I tried to get permission to detect an area near 1812 historical site and was denied. A lady that knew him said that 4 wheelers had been tearing up his property and that was probably the reason.

Maybe if you offer the Churches ten percent they might change their mind. Some years ago I had a park attendant lead me around and show me holes two feet in diameter dug by some lunk head. Some people don't have an ounce of brains.

When I read this I thought wow maybe the guy moved here....I've been filling a lot of craters lately left by someone. It sure does burn me when I see the damage people have left behide.

I havent seen many detectorists around here where I live and I rarely see signs that anyone has been at it. Admittedly, much of my detecting is in less than civilised spots, but when it is, I tend to have it all to muself, so I'm lucky. But, it has gotta wrankle your last nerve, Bill, to see such crap on the TV.

Even worse had he been excavating craters to capture pennies.

When I go coin shooting in a park or someones yard, I always use a small 2" digging tool.
Last week a guy stopped in a park where I was digging and ask if he could join me. He started digging with a 8" wide contractors shovel. In my opinion if a person is digging out in the middle of a farm field, looking for cannonballs a big shovel may be OK, however when in someones yard or a park, we should make as small a hole as possible. When I first started this hobby, I found places where I had dug and the lawn mower had lifted my dig and left a big hole, I then when out and bought a descent digging tool and retired my shovel.

From the land ofthe Bluenose....that is too funny. have been on the tube twice in the last year and I'll tell you it's nerve racking...lol!

Where do you live? We have four large treasure hunting clubs locally.
Really tough sometimes finding a good place to hunt.

Yeah whenever I see a guy with a shovel for coinshooting the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I usually have to talk to them about it.. Common sense should tell one that a shovel is a bit large for digging up an object one inch in diameter but some people have no brains whatsoever. When I first started out I never dreamed of using a shovel in a park, school yard, or someone's yard.

My partner and me were at a school one time and this geek came in with his detector, follwed by three young kids all armed with shovels. He would walk along, get a signal, wouldn't even pinpoint it, and order his kids to dig. When they got through it looked like no mans land. I wanted to jump this guy so bad but didn't want to dress him down in front of his kids, so when they left my buddy and me filled all the holes and cleaned the mess up. I've seen guys loaded down with enough tools to excavate the World Trade center. What in the world do they think they are searching for?

Portland, Oregon. We have parks everywhere plus the largest and the smallest parks in the U.S.. We have a park downtown that is one square foot and one at the edge of town that covers 5000 acres and is just a giant forest - named Forest Park no less. Every neighborhood has one or more parks.
