I found out a few years back that the Scorpion Really Banged hard on rings. When searching in places, especially parks and sports fields, I have noticed that Scorp bangs hard on all round circular objects like round pulltabs, beaver tail pull tabs and of course rings. Now my other vlf machines will pick up a gold ring, but generally with a softer tone. Not the Scorp. It bangs loud and clear on gold rings, possibly because of it's higher 15 kHz operating frequency. I usually operate the Scorp in auto mode, unless I want more depth. For greater depth, I do ground balance it and notice a nice depth improvement too. In busy junky fields, I just set the disc at the default position, 6.5. To hunt in clean areas with little junk, I just hunt in true all metal mode, and when I get a signal, I switch it to disc mode. If the targets disappears, I ignore it. If however the target continues to give a strong signal, I make an educated guess to dig or not to dig based on the sound and sound cut off from the toe of the coil.. I find pinpointing in true all metal mode off the toe of the coil gives me greater accuracy, and I can judge the approximate depth and conductivity by the strength & sound of the analog audio plus how fast the audio cuts out when the coil has just passed the target. The faster the cutoff, the shallower the target and the better conductivity. Rings cut off real fast and Nice a strong sound even at deeper depths.
You have to really learn the tones on this machine, and for good depth in normal conditions, set the depth knob as high as you want without it being unstable in auto, all metal mode, then turn the audio clockwise until it starts to get unstable, then finally back off turning it counter clockwise 2 complete revolutions. This is now set to give you nice hard audio hits on rings and coins.
Good Luck
