Which would you choose?...

Its snowing hard here in the Ohio Valley, and cold too. So, I thought I would pick the brains of you Tesoro experts about the Golden uMax.

So which one would you choose if both choices were available:

1) A brand new (from a dealer) Old Tone Golden uMax, with the Lifetime warranty or...

2) What looks like a nice USED Golden uMax, with New Tones (but no warranty).

After reading many, many posts, it seems like the close-middle tones on the older tone version was a major complaint, but I also have read a lot of posts by guys who said it was not a problem for them, and then there were those guys who sent the Old tone in to get the new tones, but then they didn't like the mod and sold it.

I'd love some insight here.

Old Tone Golden uMax hands down

It is my understanding that the new tones one are a little deeper machines. Buying a used tesoro doesn't concern me because tesoro has been great about fixing anything for me. Good luck in your choice. Either way you can't go wrong as the golden is a special machine

I have had both of them. I never got used to the old tone and traded it for something else. When the new tone came out I bought one and I really like it. it's up to you as to what you do, but I would get the new tone and take a chance on it not needing the warrant.

I have heard Tesoro may be cracking down a little on free fixes on tesoros that are not in the original owners possession. I can't say that for sure but I have read posts on multiple sites stating that. However, I got a used tesoro coming to me in the mail from the good old classified section on this website from Monte and I am pretty confident in Tesoros quality. I guess it's what you feel most comfortable with. If the new tone one looks great and you know it's been taken care of then I would probably prefer that one.

I can say for sure. I contacted them when I bought a mint Vaquero off of a local guy. He had used it a couple times but decided he wanted a screen. This Vaquero had a very current serial number and had the warranty card. I was told by Tesoro to not bother sending the warranty card in because I wasn't the original buyer. I also have a Deleon that looks like it never made it outside before I had it. Not even a grass stain on the coil cover. No warranty either.

I suppose I could have been dishonest and said I was the original buyer, but I'm not going to sell out my integrity for the possibility of having to pay $50 some time in the future. Also, I want Tesoro (the company) to be successful, and here for the long haul. I'm not about to chip away at that to save myself $50. If at some point one of my used Tesoro needs work (which is unlikely), then I will happily pay for repairs.

That's what I thought Dan. However 50.00 isn'tt bad at all for the repair work they have to do on these machines and at that price you're still getting a bargain.

Yeah...a few things to consider...whats the price difference between the New and the Used? How well do you know the guy selling the used, and how much do you trust him?

Buying New from a dealer would be preferred UNLESS the used is cherry, a hell of a deal, and you know it didnt see much abuse. Good Luck, let us know.
Mud...

Well... I decided to go with the New Tesoro with old tones. I must have called and emailed two dozen dealers or more to find one new, and then it was an Old Tone version. The more I think about it, the more I'm glad I went with the old tone version, as the tones stay in the order of conductivity. I have not seen it yet, it is still in route (but I have a tracking number # with UPS). I only hope that it is not a very old edition of the old tone model (meaning I want the louvers on the speaker, and I forgot to ask before making the purchase). In the end, I was afraid of buying a used golden and not having the warranty, in light of the fact that the golden is discontinued (I confirmed that with Tesoro).

The other factor was that I did not know the seller of the used new tone (it was on ebay). It looked really nice, but he wanted $500 (that included a padded bag, coil cover, and head phones). When you consider the extras, I think it was a fair price and it was a real toss up. But the warranty became the deciding factor for me.

Can't wait to get it. I am still looking forward to the new model Tesoro plans to release this summer. I figured I would need two machines anyways so that I could have an extra for family members/friends to hunt with. Thought I better grab the Golden new, while I still could.

Any tips about how to use that notching feature with the old tone edition would be greatly appreciated.

I think you made a sound decision. I would like to own a golden myself but by the time I get around to it I will probably have to get a used one. You might as well get one new while you can.You got a good one coming.

The New Golden "older tones" uMax arrived yesterday! I only had a chance to open the box and look at it briefly. I was happy to see that it had the newer faceplate with louver speaker. This is the first Tesoro I have owned and have never actually seen one, apart from a photo or video. I cannot believe how small the control box is! Now we just need a good thaw so I can go out and try it.

Congrats on your new purchase and best of luck with it!

The control box my be small but you will be surprise what you the golden can do. Beep and dig is the way to go for me, it's not for everyone but the golden will reward you with many great finds. Happy hunting, if you have any questions on the golden drop me a line:thumbup:
