Which White's Model?

rnm17

New member
I've been lurking for about a month now and I think I'm ready to join the hunt (BTW, this is truly a great site and forum). I plan on buying a White's because of their reputation, but have yet to decide on which particular model. Since I don't know if I'm going to love this hobby (probably depends on what I find the first few times out), I'm tentative on jumping in for too much money - but I also don't want to get something so low end that I can't give this a fair chance.

Anyway, I live in Washington State, which I'm told is highly mineralized and the MXT was recommended, but I've also been looking at the IDX Pro and Classic 5ID - which look very similar. Does anyone know what is different between the IDX Pro and Classic 5ID? Also, of the 3 with stock coils, does anyone have any thoughts on depth comparisons? Thanks for any feedback.

Go MXT!!! I have the IDX and the MXT and the MXt is in a totally different catergorie than the IDX which is very similar to the prizim series detectors. Put a 5.3 on the MXT and you will be loving life. Awesome little detector!!

Of the three choices you named the MXT is the best, especially if you live in a highly mineralized ground. The MXT is the only one that has automatic ground balance to monitor the ground and a lot more detail in the readout to let you know what you have found.

The IDX is a excellent machine, but with no depth reading, and less detail on the readout I think you will like the MXT the best.

Good Luck,

Tom in Tenn.

The IDX pro is only like the Prizm's, by comparison, in that they are turn-on-and-go and do not have the autotracking circuitry of the MXT, etc.

I have used all the Prizm models, and I have owned a Priam ... briefly ... and there is NO WAY I would take a Prizm model over my IDX Pro!

Regardless of all the high-tech features and functions and TID info, I still get the most use out of my IDX Pro than all my other makes/models. I'd put my IDX Pro up against a Prizm unit any day of the week.

one that you can best afford, and remember to get at least one accessory coil for it to have a more versatile set-up.

Now, to answer your post:

"I live in Washington State, which I'm told is highly mineralized..."... Where in Washington do you live? I am in the Portland, Oregon metro area, and I know that some of Washington is a bit 'challenging' but not all of it.

".. and the MXT was recommended,.."... By a dealer, or by actual users of detecting equipment who are not dealers?

".. but I've also been looking at the IDX Pro and Classic 5ID - which look very similar.".... The Classic IDX Pro is, in my personal opinion, one of the best models that ANY manufacturer has EVER Produced. It is not always understood and so many do not appreciate what it can do or how to get the most out of it. Unfortunately, that's true of almost any other make or model.

White's produced two 'Classic ' models that featured visual Target ID. First was the Classic ID, and then later the IDX which was then up-graded to the IDX Pro.

The Classic ID was a two-knob design that had a sensitivity and discriminate level control. The IDX/IDX Pro also had a Frequency Shift control, and also a Normal/Black Sand toggle. This was the misunderstood control! What it actually does when toggling into 'Black Sand' is expand or enhance the lower-end of the discriminate rejection range.

I use an IDX Pro most of the time. More than the MXT, GTAx-1250, Silver Sabre

Monte...

In my post i said it is very familiar to a prizim series detector. NOT the same as. The IDX, which i own, is alot closer to the preformance of the prizm series of detectors. The MXT, which i also own, Is a far better detector than either of the above mentioned. I started detecting several years back with my IDX and it was a awesome first detector. The MXT is a very easy to learn detector also and a great first and last detector. Put a 5.3 on a MXT and its scary good. It ranks right up ther with the dfx in preformance with alot lower price tag. Its whites hottest detector for awhile now so that alone says alot. I went over my yard with my new MXT and found several coins that i missed with the old IDX that i had went over time and time again learning.

If it were me id call whites and ask them their opinion. They were VERY helpful on my decision. They were dead on with their info about the IDX and MXT differences when I called.

Wow - I would really like to thank everyone for their advice! It's nice to get such informative responses - especially as a newbie.

To answer your questions, Monte:
I live in Western Washington - just east of Lake Washington, but I do plan on taking it camping with me in Eastern Washington. Actually, not only camping - but fishing - I bet a metal detector would be great for finding fishing lures and other gear (sinkers, swivels, hooks, etc.).

The MXT was recommended to me by a KellyCo rep (J.W.) because of where I live. BTW, the current KellyCo price is $720.

I still haven't made my choice yet, but you guys have given me a lot to think about. It sounds like I'd be happy with either model - especially as I'm just starting out. I think I'll base my decision on the sale of my fishing boat - if that goes through soon and for a good number, I'll get the MXT, if not, I'll go with the IDX Pro - although I must admit I like the idea of one day owning both. Thanks again for taking the time to post and share your knowledge.

most dealers can and will go to 15% off list.

Till the end of Aug there is also the free pinpointer and head phones from whites, you can also get a 14DD coil at half price.

coupons are on the Whites website and they will make your deal sweeter,

you will also have someone local you can talk with and get answers to any and all questions.

Your choice should take into account the types of hunting you plan to do.If nugget shooting is a major area then by all means go with the MXT.If you might hunt a lot of trashy sites consider the IDX Pro.The IDX was discontinued recently so that those dealers which still have them sould sell them at a discount. It was cheaper than the MXT anyhow. There are a lot of used 6.59 Khz coils out there if you want extras for the IDX which is another money saving angle.I would not bother with the Prism or Classic 5ID.If you check the classifieds on Findmall,an IDX Pro just came up for sale and White`s warranties are trasferable.

Rick,

Here's my two cents. If your budget can afford it go for a DFX. If your budget can't afford it wait til it can.

If your anything like me you will always wonder if the machine your bought is the right one. Is there a more capable machine, Will another machine detect deeper, did I miss out by not getting the dual frequency capability of the DFX. On and On and On. There will always be that lingering doubt.

For me the decision was difficult but I was looking to replace an aging MT. I fully appreciated the fact that no MT is going to be all things to all people nor will it perfect in its abiliy to detect any and all targets. If there was such a machine the world of metal detecting would be a completely different place. Thus I chose, what in my assessment, was the most capable MT on the market. White's DFX.

Post your question on the DFX classroom forum and see what recommendations other DFX users can offer.

If youre not sure if you will stay with MDing. I would check out renting one. That way youre not out much money if you dont stick with it. Check with your local dealer. And if you stick with it I would go with the DfX.

Thanks everyone for your help! I've decided to go with the MXT (just sold my fishing boat and have some cash for this now) - and I've found a better deal than KellyCo - although, it's not local either. I like the idea of be able to go to a local dealer, however sales tax is pretty high here (around 8.8%). I'll probably go to a local dealer for some accessories so I have a place to drop in on for questions. I have used a friend's very old Tesoro (from the early 80's) many years ago, so I think I'll like this hobby - although the problem with that one was virtually no discrimination. Also, I recently heard that there are some places in Washington (eastern) to hunt for nuggets, so the MXT made the most sense with that in mind. Thanks again everyone - and I hope to post some pictures soon.

Since you are ordering from Kellyco you can get a discount on their excellerator coils if you buy them with the detector. The stock coil is not very good in junky sites.Monte recomends the 5"DD and 8"DD Excellerator coils and I quite agree. You will enjoy your new detector more and save money if you get the whole package now.Happy hunting!
