i have a new chum recently met who has invited me to go gold hunting with him.he's talking pi detectors are the only way to go.i have a vaquero.he says vlf are okay, but pi are better.should i invest in a lobo super trac,a sand shark or just stick with the vaquero and hopefully prove him wrong.i have never been gold hunting and i would like to see my detector find the good stuff. what do you all think.hh see ya blowfly

G/Day blowfly,
If you are going gold hunting and do not have a PI that is set up for the gold fields then the Lobo Supa Traq is a good bet, it will handle fairly high iron mineralisation, has moderately fast auto ground track that is probably the best auto ground tracker in the business, The detector runs at around 17kHz which means it is good on small nuggets near the surface and it goes deep for the bigger ones. I cannot comment on the minelab unit because I know nothing about it.

G/Day again Blowfly,
Just one other point, The Sand Shark will not handle heavy iron mineralisation and hot rocks in the gold fields, it is a beach machine.

I think the V may be able to do a pretty decent job if all you are going is 1 time. If you plan on going more than a few times, I would get the Lobo. Adrian is correct...the Sand Shark is a beach machine.

From what I hear about the Lobo, it's also a really good coin and jewelry machine too.

The folks at Tesoro would have a lot more specific information than our WAG's...The "V" running just hardly discrimination really reaches down on 14K and plated.Even better on 24.....I have a friend in Oz, and if I were going gold one trip, I would take my "V"...I really don't know if I could swing anything else all day. ,cordially Nad

thank you one and all for your straight shooting comments.i'll go with the vaquero ,cause i'd like it to outdo the other brands.and put to rest some of the derogatory remarks about the size of the control box .i like my little toy.see ya blowfly

I think that is tha way ta go Blow Fly.

Tha V is tha most sensitive machine I got

when it comes to small gold jewelry.

If you have read my post, you know I have

found gold items less than a grain several

times now.

Gold nuggets are tougher. They don't have

alloys and they have a small, irregular profile

that makes it hard for any metal detector

to pick up.

I have tried nugget huntin on my own, but

never found a flake.

But, I didn't have a Tesoro at tha time.

I won't say what I did have, but there's

not much gold in Arkie Land anyway.

Hope you have better luck,

Tabdog

thank you , tabdog.where i live there is only two users of tesoro's,in a sea of minelabs, that i know of.if you bump into one of these other's in the field while detecting, you can be the target of some pretty snide remarks and i think i always look to the tesoro forum to bolster up my resolve in what i'm doing.but i suppose i kinda deserve it .when i see one of these others in the field,i follow them, pretending to find targets that they have missed.i don't understand why they get so steamed up,pack up and go home.nobody follows me, especially on a beach as i chain it.it's 0530 hrs, pouring outside and this has dampened my spirit so to speak,no pun intended,it would appear that the wet has finely set in.we have only two seasons here .wet and dry.the rain ain't cold but you can feel pretty miserable when completely saturated and the lightning is crackling all round you.i often wonder whether detectorist would suffer ,like golfers, in an electrical storm.rains stopping,i ain't. hh see ya blowfly:detecting:

Gold jewelry is a combination of metals. I still think the V is the best bet for you at this point unless you spring for a true nugget machine. I hope you do find some nice nugs and put all the big boys to shame.

Have fun
