Which Vaquero coils are best for coin hunting?

Macaco

New member
Hi All,

Long post, sorry.

I'm ready to buy a Vaquero.

I'm going to use it primarily for hunting for coins and relics around ghost towns. I expect there to be lots of iron junk in the places I plan to hunt and everything I've read indicates that the Tesoro machines are great in such situations.

What I'm not clear on is what the best choice of coils will be for discriminating ferous from non-ferous targets. I want to get a couple smaller coils for my machine when I buy it.

The choice seems to be between the concentric coils and the 'WideScan' coils. Which would be my best choice, in moderately to lightly mineralized ground, for discriminating coins near iron junk?

I have two other machines from another manufacturer and both machines have DD coils (that's all I've ever used). My understanding has been that DD coils are better than concentric coils for picking out good stuff that is next to iron junk. On another forum though I've read that the Tesoro concentric may actually be better than the 'WideScan'. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking about another coil in the 8" range for my coinshooting.

Last question, if I end up using my Vaquero for nugget hunting should I get a 'WideScan' coil for that?

Thanks in advance.

(Cross posted at Tesoro's forum too).

Macaco, for the Vaquero I just think you'd really come to love the
8" concentric, my personal general use favorite. I've always
preferred concentric's for their spot on accuracy, especially on
Tesoro's with their exceptional discrimination, since concentrics
excel at discrimination over widescans anyway, as also for efficient pinpointing.

For gold hunting the widescan will do a mite better in the ironized
soils of gold country(see's less of the iron), but the concentric
will perform well too, IMO. I'd go with the 9x8 conc. for gold, again
because I always prefer concentrics anyway. I haven't used the
Vaquero for nuggets as yet, but as well as it finds gold jewelry, I
know it'll do well in gold country too. Of course, you'll be using
the all metal mode in most areas of that environment, with occasional
checks in disc. mode. The Vaquero's manual GB will excel there also.
For coins, in trashy ground especially, mineralized or not, I've
found the 8" and 5.75" to be exceptionally effective coils any time,
especially on the Vaquero. Tesoro coils are beautifully engineered
for their various models and perform flawlessly. Real pleasures to
use.
Happy Hunting!

Thanks Robby,

I'll go for the concentric 8" and 5".

I've only used Minelab machines (Sovereign and Excalibur) which both have DD coils.

I'm really looking forward to getting the Vaquero. I'm sure the concentric coils will be easy to adjust to after ten years of only using DD's.

Thanks again.

I don't have a Tesoro, read about them as I want one, but a partner uses the Vaquero. The recovery time is real fast which helps in trash areas. This is a real plus to me. If my eyes were better and I could read the characters on the machine head - I would already have one. Keeping glasses on with headphones side pressure = headache. I'm trying to work this one out.

For coins, hands down the 5.75 coil. AFter I got the small coil I almost never used the big coil again.
