Which UW detectors use a multi tone audio?

bugg

New member
I might pick up a wading machine next spring, and need your help sending me in the right direction. thanks

If you could only have one, it would have to be Excal II 800 or 1000, depending on how much coverage you would like. That would be my immediate suggestion. I will soon also be asail, with a CZ21, so we'll see. That is how I currently feel about your choice, for now.

Report on the CZ 21 GH. Let us know if its the new sword of choice.

Im looking at freshwater lakes, neutral soil, mid priced. Minelab is too pricey for me, although one diamond could cover that.
Been looking at headhunter & beachcomber on the web, local dealers have neither.Just looking for opinions.
Any one ever try the viper/cobra line? thanks

OK, fresh water options are less expensive and you could possibly have greater options. I have used Headhunter Wader and Diver and they are both great in fresh water. 1/2 the cost of Excal and quite capable units. It is also my understanding that the Tesoro Tiger Shark is a capable weapon, but have never used one for fresh water, as well. Any of these would be GREAT choices, but STEER CLEAR of viper/cobra line, YE HAVE BEEN WARNED! You get what you pay for in this business and this is a hobby that pays! GH

if you want tones,my choice would be Excal,CZ20 or CZ21...if you want a very good fresh & salt water detector and dont have to have tones,i dont think you will beat the Tiger Shark iv owned 3 of them and they were all great.and lifetime warranty.about the only one that will pick up Gold Ear studs and chains! and about 1/2 the price of the others.good luck

I will probably pick up a new excal in February but I can't help but look at the Tiger Shark out of the corner of my eye.

I think if I were convinced I would be doing strictly freshwater I would go with the Tiger Shark - I don't personally have one, but I researched it alot at one time and heard many many good things about them. It's NOT tones, but the guys that use them swear by them.

I have to be able to do salt water though so the Tiger Shark is not a good choice for multi use.

What kind of forum is this? All I asked was one simple question. But that's nothing new. I've asked questions and made a few rare comments before and have been completely ignored in each case.

I've been metal detecting since 1971 and have found that, generally speaking, md'ers are the best, friendliest folks around. But I don't understand this bunch. I use Irish Spring and I shower daily. Really. If this place is a "closed shop," just say so and I won't bother to frequent here again. Geesh!

I am sorry......where is your complaint stemming from?,,,,,,and be specific please..cause I must have missed something.......????

Tiger Shark sounds like hummmmmmmmmmmmm, not a PI machine.

Works good on land also.

Being "land-locked here in Arkansas, the Tiger Shark would be a good dive machine, but I know that one gets what one pays for. It is nevertheless enticing, at half the price of a new excal. But I know that I'll probably go ahead and get the excal. I've owned other minelabs (explorer) and was pretty impressed with it after I got to where I could understand its 'language.'

...but I still might tap into a tigershark. We'll see after I learn the excal. Being so far from the coasts, it is not often I ever encounter a md'er with a water unit. (only once) I read a post by someone on treasurenet or here that they thought the shark was a pi machine and I really don't want another pi unit. Thanks so muc, for your post.

I would also consider a White's BeachHunter ID. has everything your looking for not to pricey and you can't beat the quality

oops!! I see you wanted a diver model. This one is only water proof to 25 feet so no diving . shallow only.

...living away from the coastline, I don't have a lot to offer. But when I do post, I have found it strange that getting a response is really not easy to do. I dismissed it initially thinking I may have said something that could have been misinterpreted or something.

I have noticed that, like my home forum (Royals 20th century...), that this forum has mainly its regular cast posting at least weekly. I learn a lot and I dream of coming to the coast and just have miles and miles to detect. That's not going to happen anytime soon so I substitute by reading what you have to say and oggle at your stunning finds. Its really fun to read your interactions. I learned a long time ago that the only way to really pay for my equipment is to get in the water, and that's what I primarily do now.

But when new people post on MY forum, we make them feel welcome and post back to them. I have just never gotten that here and today, I just decided to voice my displeasure. Why? Well, mainly, it really doesn't matter if I am not acepted here for whatever reason. I'm old enough to know this is a killer sport with lots of nice folks, generally. The rewards are great, too. But to someone who may be new to the field, it could give them a sense that we are just a bunch of snobs running around with our expensive machines trying to "one-up" each other all the time.

Now, I know that is not the case. I just get a little bit undone with folks/forums that aren't so friendly when it costs absolutely nothing to be nice and to represent our hobby in the best light. The Lord knows we don't need to shoot OURSELVES in the foot with everyone else taking pot-shots at us. I learned a long time ago that the real treasure is NOT in the sand, but in the smile of a friend I meet along the way.

So each time I post and no one responds, I think, "Hey, maybe Jack the Ripper used my handle before me and they just don't want to associate." I can handle it OK for a while, but I don't think a newby should be subjected to such. Yes, I've seen it happen here with others.

There. I feel better. I'll get down off my soap box. If you guys ever want to visit a really friendly forum, come on over to Royal's 20th Century Story Forum, introduce yourselves and share a story with us. We are a bunch that would really, sincerely like to hear of some of your adventures. We don't write fancy but we all write straight from the heart. If you come for a visit, I will make sure--as will about 50 other writers--that you feel most welcome. I promise.

Hello John: You are absolutely right about the warm welcome that writers receive at Royal's forum, a fine bunch of folks. The Beach and Water folks are also warm and welcoming but the response to your question doesn't show it as much, probably because of the question you asked. You see John, the question about which UW detector to use is one that is asked on this forum every few weeks and after a while less and less members take the time to respond. I suppose we feel that we've answered it enough times in the past that it's not too much to ask the newbie to do his own homework and read the older posts. Depending upon how long you have been lurking you should have already had at least a partial answer to your question.
When I first started posting on this forum I am sure I pestered a lot of the veterans of this type of MD'ing with too many Newbie questions myself, so perhaps I wore out some of the responses, my apologies if I was a pest and many thanks for all the help I was given. The good folks here were tireless in answering my questions just the same and I will gladly share my two cents with you now.
EXCAL - argueably one of the best water detectors on the market and most of the veterans swing them with good success, a must have for salt water but expensive
INFINIUM - a deep PI with a steep learning curve and only high/low or low/high discrimination John in Edmonton has done well with his in freshwater
TIGERSHARK - a bargain for the freshwater hunter that will pick up chains and small targets that the Excal will normally cruise right over - Martin QC does very well with his in the freshwaters of Quebec but also swings an Excal so you decide
VIPER/COBRA - don't waste your $$'s, the fact is you have to make a reasonable investment in order to go UW and this isn't the model for the job
I'm sure there are other models out there that others favour but these would be my picks for an underwater detector, especially if I was going to be using a hookah rig as I know you plan to. I suspect you will do very well for yourself hunting the freshwater as they are less frequently hunted compared to the big, saltwater, tourist beaches. I hope you make the right choice in detectors and have yourself a blast pulling up lots beautiful freshwater loot.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

John, I have been posting on this forum for a year now. I have never asked a question that was not answered in a friendly manner. Some times my questions went unanswered for a few days . I have learned that more people post here on the weekends and if I ask questions at the first of the week sometimes it takes a few days before someone who knows the answer gets around to giving it. I have never in that year, until now seen anyone post a question and within 48 hours attack the fine people on this or any other forum for not getting around to giving an answer in the time frame they felt it should be answered in. I was one of the 29 viewers of your post , I have no knowledge of the Tiger Shark or how it sounds or works so I felt I could be of no help to you. I hope you continue to post on this forum with your 36 years of detecting I am sure you could answer some of the questions of others. We need all the knowledge that is out there. Sorry you feel we are the (most unfriendliest group) on this forum, but I respectfully disagree. HH

Hi I've only used one underwater PI machine and that is the Infinium. It's an awesome detector, with dual tone and reverse discrimination. I have owned and operated many brands of detectors over the last 14yrs, and find that the infinium beats them all hands down. It goes DEEP and I mean deep! I have picked up Australian 50c pieces at a measured depth of 18" and the signal was strong! I have detected the same ground that has been hit by the locals using their Excalaburs and Soveriegns from minelab, and picked up over $30 and jewelery from the same area the same day! Plus the fact you can dive to 200' one day, detect the wet and dry sand the next day, and then hit the goldfields the next day! make this detector the best multi task detector in the world today.(that is only my opinion) The price is reasonable. HH regards Nugget.:ausflag:

I suppose I was just interested in knowing how the Tiger Shark sounded. In the 80's I bought a Garrett Sea Hunter and was a bit disappointed after I received it. I bought it blind, depending totally upon the fine "Garrett" name. That was my mistake. I must admit that I did pay for it with just four dives!

But the Excal will be my next detector. Why? Well, I have read many, many posts here of folks that use it day in and day out and I value what is said here.

Thanks for posting, buddy. Hope you and yours are doing well in this blessed Christmas holiday!

...I posted my opinion...only after seemingly repeated snubs. It wasn't an "attack." Sometimes the perception is stronger than the act--and that works two ways. Like I said, I can deal with it, but after a while, I'm likely to let my opinion be known--especially if I feel it impacts those who are new to the hobby.

"nuff said. I know this forum is made up of a bunch of good, talented, persistent (and sometimes lucky) folks. It just seemed the welcome mat had been kicked into the corner. It takes all three to stay with this game and have any success with it.

I retire in twelve months, should I live so long. I hope to hit all the lakes around here with a new excal and a good hookah system. Do you know I have only seen ONE water machine in Arkansas???? Only one. That tells me there is much to be found around here. I'd like to be around a while to find some of it. We'll see.

Thanks for the post.
