Which Tesoro?

Hi, I'm new to m/ding and this forum. I presently have a ace 250 but want to go deeper. what all-around machine would you all recommend? X-70, MXT seem to be good machines But for some reason, Tesoro seems to draw me. I was told that the relic machine is good on coins too. Would like input. Don't want to spend the next 5 years learning but also don't want to outgrow it in a year. Thanks

The Vaquero is a great all-around machine from what I hear, and I have one on the way to me as we speak.

The nice thing is that it has manual ground-balancing, so no matter where you go, you can adjust it for current ground conditions wherever it is that you are hunting.

However, if you don't want to spend $420, the Cibola is also a great detector, and is essentially a Vaquero without the manual ground balance, and instead has a pre-set balance.

Just keep in mind though, that you won't have a TID, and will definitely have to practice listening to tones to determine what's under your coil.

If you want to stick with a TID, the DeLeon looks like a pretty decent detector too, though you'll pay more for the TID display.

I'm in SC. I think TID is some sort of indicator, right? Are these machines comparable with the xterras, whites, garretts?

Hi Reade,
I recently switched over from Whites detectors to Tesoro and I like them more.I have a Vaquero and I just got a Deleon a couple weeks ago.The Vaquero is simple to use and compares to detectors that cost twice as much.I thought that switching to a non TID machine would be hard but it was a snap as far as the Deleon goes I'm still learning it because the heat has been to much for me but from what I've seen it to is a really good machine.
If a read out type machine don't matter to you go with the Vaquero for the manual ground balance.
Just my two cents

P.S.Life time warranty, light weight, ease of use and more for less money.

Thanks for your input. I have a question. I have a friend who has the mxt. It puts out a constant tone and when it detects something, the tone changes. Is that the same tone you're talking about that i will have to learn? That's kind of what i'm looking for. the readout is nice, depth especially, but i don't have to have it, but would like it. I just don't want to spend a lot of money to get a machine that will only get one more inch than the ace 250 if that makes sense.

Yeah, TID is 'Target Identification', that tells you what the detector suspects is under your coil, as well as the estimated depth.

The Vaquero uses fainter beeps to give estimated depth, and changes pitch as the target gets closer to the coil.

I had considered the Garrett Ace 250 for my next detector until I found this forum and really saw what these detectors can do... Tesoro is probably the best bang-for-your-buck detectors you can buy.

I plan on keeping the Vaquero around for quite a while, since it should handle everything I plan to throw at it, plus it also has a lifetime guarantee.

Good luck with your decision.

The two detectors I mentioned are silent search when in disc.mode and give a single pitch beep when over a target, the loudness of the beep depends on the depth of the target unless you have them super tuned which will make the target response the same no matter how deep the target is.
As far as the MXT is concerned it is a good machine and has very good depth but I found it to be to noisy for my liking.

When you get your Vaquero, lay a couple of 16d nails and a nickel on top of the ground, keep the nickel about 16 inches away from the nails. Next ground balance the Vaquero set in the disc mode and crank the threshold to about 75% and turn the DISC knob clockwise, while sweeping the coil over the nails, until the nails no longer respond when the coil is swept over them.

Now take the nails and lay them on top of the nickel and sweep the coil over the nickel with the nails on top of it, what you will notice is the nickel will sound off loud and clear. The MXT can not pass this test, it will not sound off on the nickel, because the nails will mask it out..

I used an MXT for two years, it is a good detector, but in areas with a lot of small iron debris, I prefer the Vaquero, slow your sweep speed down and listen for any sound breaking the silent search.

Hunting in ALL METAL requires that you first ground balance and then set the threshold to a slight hum, listen for any slight change in the threshold hum as you sweep the coil over the ground, I can tell you that the Vaquero has a real fash autotune and hunting in all metal will be a challenge, you can acheive the same depth in DISC with the Vaquero supertuned, and all metal mode will sound off on all metal targets, so an area with a lot of targets in the ground will drive you crazy. Run the V in DISC mode, supertuned with a slow to medium sweep speed and dig the goodies, that other detectors are missing, due to masking.
