Which Tesoro

G'day from Aussie, I have been trying to buy a Tesoro Cibola either new or used - no luck here in Aust. The dealer here only has a Vaquero or an Outlaw with 8" coil, both new. Which would be the better of the two? I mainly hunt coins and jewellery in parks and on dry sand beaches. The Outlaw is the cheaper of the two, around $65 less than the Vaquero. I have received really good reports on the Cibola that's why I chose to go with that.
Look forward to any replies or suggestions.
Cheers from Aussie,
Kevin

I can only speak for the outlaw. I have had it for about a year and it is a coin monster. Mine came with three coils and the lower shaft with each coil. . I basically use the 8 inch coil for the houses I detect. It is also spot on with the pinpoint. That being said I am sure the Vaquero is also a great machine. I have owned at least 5 Tesoros and have loved them all. You can't go wrong with either one.

I have read on the Aussie forums how much everyone loves the performance of the Cibola.
Personally can't understand it, without manual ground balance, the Cibola with fixed ground balance is not that great in hot mineralized ground with hot rocks.
And I have not read about anyone adjusting the internal ground balance trimpot. What's up with that?
I had three of them myself, the only one that worked decent in hot ground was the one I modified with manual ground balance.

I would have thought the V would have been better in Aussieland and then the Outlaw.

based on hunting parks i would get the outlaw and the 10 x 12 coil and hunt in threshold all metal with the threshold set at 11:00 you will ignore lots of small foils & junk and pick up the meat and potatoes Gold rings I probably would also get the 7" DD for the mineralized ground the outlaw is a great park hunter in my opinion, not so much for deep relics, the vaq is deeper but in mineralized ground the disq is not going to do so well , and in all metal will pick up every piece of foil down to 8" but hay if a gold ring is deep in the sand the vaq in all metal can hit that at about 14" I got rid of my outlaw because i could not get out to the soccer fields to use it as originally intended. , but if I could hunt those spots i would pick the outlaw over any metal detecter i have owned so far , I liked the outlaw because in all metal threshold with the threshold turned dwn to 11 o clock you will miss all the 22 shell small nails most foils unless they are big , and no nails deeper than 6" but if a gold ring is down in the ground that outlaw will let you know its down there and it was especially good at doing that with the 10x12 DD I now can only hunt the woods & farm so i now have a VAQUERO and it is deep I thought of getting an F-70 but figured that their is no depth advantage in the F-70 anyway good hunting to you .

I think either would be a good choice as they both have manual ground balance. I'm in agreement with those that question the fixed ground on the Cibola. It works well in parks and play fields etc. over here, but not the best choice where ground mineralization becomes an issue.

I own a cibola, while i think it is a good machine in the right ground my ground here is not the right ground. if i were to buy one now i would get the vaquero,go with the manual ground balance .haveing said that i would not sell my cibola and i might end up with a AT pro by Garrett.

Hey mate hows it goin? I'm up in Queensland Australia and have detected all over this great land and would take any machine that can be ground balanced manually every time. Having said that I do own a Tesoro Lobo ST and love it. If you are just going to target coins and some jewelry the Cibola would be a good choice however if you were to venture beyond parks and fields to the beach or gold fields you would be disappointed. Whilst the LST does NOT have manual GB it does have features that can help deal with HOT ground unlike the Cibola. The Vaquero would be the better option if you wanted more variety in areas to cover so that is something to think about. For coin shooting here in Australia I use another machine that has proved time and again that it is my first weapon of choice and I make it no secret the ATP. For tones, discrimination, unlimited warranty and no fuss the Tesoro's are hard to beat. If you want to have a chat about some information on machines just mail me. Either way you can't loose here its a win win whatever you choose.
Cheers!

I would go for the Vaquero, then if you decide to prospect you have a machine capable of doing both also the Vaquero is deep. and has manual ground balance. Basically its a Cibola on steroids.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I have decided on the Cibola and have ordered one, should be here next week. I just wanted a lightweight turn on and go machine for coins etc. I have a Whites MXT that I use and it is a very versatile machine, can be used for gold prospecting but I don't do much of that. So I'll wait and see with the Cibola, can't wait to try it out.

Cheers,

Cibola is a great choice hopefully it wont have GB issues, the only flaw with it is no manual GB. Regardless its a great machine. Congrats!

Don't second guess your decision to buy the Cibola.
Your not any worse off with the Cibola than if you were using a fixed ground balance Compadre or Silver umax.
They are no better in hot mineralized ground.
You can usually get a good buy on a used Cibola.........while all the attention is on the Compadre and Silver...

And if you get a 5.75" coil you'll be golden. It will find small stuff.

Have fun with it.

Well the Cibola arrived today, have just assembled it and done the usual air tests on our coins. I must say I'm impressed but when I supertuned it I got at least another 2 to 3 inches. I quickly tested it in my back yard where I have a old predecimal penny buried at 7 inches - no problems, picked it up just fine, not supertuned either. Had no problem with the fixed ground balance, so I think it will be just fine for my requirements. I will give it a thorough workout over the weekend.:tesoro:

Cheers from Aussie,
Kevin
