Which Tesoro to buy for this purpose.

Hi, I want a Tesoro because I want lightweight, simple, deepseeking, and manual analog dials--not touch pad. I am looking to buy a Tesoro detector to use for "pinpointing" in "All Metal" with, once I first get a signal with my Minelab GP3000 while looking for gold nuggets. And of course to check for trash as well in "Disc." mode also.

I saw in web page picture a fellow had a Silver Umax with a smaller coil to use for this exact purpose while prospecting.

The Compadre has a motion silent search All Metal with no sensitivity knob. Would this do??

The Silver Umax has a non-motion silent search All Metal and the Cibola has a non-motion threshold All Metal. I feel I do not need the Vaquero's manual GB.

I do not want to buy a Lobo ST because of price as it is too expensive for me right now.

What I want to know is what detector do you recommend to get for this purpose and do I need the threshold or will the silent search All Metal will do??

I wouldn't use any of the ones you list. My choice would be a Bandido II if you can find one. You need threshold. Vaquero is optimal with a higher frequency for small gold nuggets.

Hay David,

My advice would be to get a used Bandido II, Bandido uMax, Eldorado or Euro Sabre.

There are a few others, but can't remember right now.

Those can be got for $200 to $325.

HH,

Having been a fan of the Vaquero in years past....it is a very good machine, why not get a Cibola? Same higher frequency as the Vaq and no fussing with the GB.

No offence to the other suggestions.

Thanks very much for your suggestions, they are appreciated. I did not necessarily want a primary nugget hunter but instead just a secondary pinpointer for the GP3000. But it would not hurt either.

I could be wrong, but I think the Bandido, then the Eldorado, Euro Sabre, and now the latest is the Vaquero, are all the Tesoro manual GB units that can be used for gold. I have found no used Bandido's yet. Vaquero looks like the best unit(used $400 and new about $450 I found) and yes the Cibola w/o GB.

The Lobo ST would be best choice but the lowest prices I found were about $640 and $675 new.

That Lobo ST is a sweet machine but the only complaint I have heard is there is no Automatic GB in the Discriminate mode, only in All Metal ?? (As other gold hunters have this feature and it is missing on the Lobo ST, correct me if I am wrong.)

Well, since the Lobo is mainly designed to find Gold, it is like most all Gold
detectors, meant to be used in all metal only, since any discrimination can miss
most Gold. The Lobo is different from most, having a coin shooting disc. mode too.

id go with the Tiger Shark as i find #4 bird shot all the time.

Where would you place the disc setting? Disc is used for nickels, pull tabs, silver, etc. Like I alluded to in my other post, I would think you needed a threshold tone and VCO to zero in on gold. I may be wrong, as I am not a gold hunter. Maybe a Deleon, since the AM threshold mode still uses the TID and you could use the numbering system to identify gold and the 5 segments to make sure it isn't gold, if that makes sense.

What kind of depth are you normally getting for those #4 shot, Bling?

Just on average, or what you can recall...

Thanks, rmptr

They had cut the pole down to that the whole thing was about 18" long. It had a 4" coil on it. If you were going to go for gold pinpointing, I would either go for the newer high frequency detectors or the Eldorado. I cut up a bunch of different sizes of lead fishing weight to simulate gold nuggets with my Bandito II umax and it didnt do real well with the stock 8" coil. A typical "small" nugget would barely repeat at 2" from the coil. The Eldo and newer detectors are a lot more sensitive to small items...plus they are a lot lighter than the older non-umax detectors. Best of luck with your decision.
