Which shaft for Excalibur?

Hello, can any of you give some advice on a straight shaft for the Excalibur? O KellyCo have so many to choose from ranging from $30 and up.

Is carbon fiber the way to go? Thanks for the help. HH -John

Most are good, I use Plugger's and it works great. The housing sits behind my elbow and the balance is so good I can hunt for hours (I usually hunt 6-8 hours) without taking a break. Hope this helps. HH

John is right about that, the Plugger shaft is a great shaft to hunt with, and if you want to spent a little more money then you go to the carbon fiber shaft, they are lighter for the money. my two cents. HH

I bought a Pluggers shaft too, not needed to look anywhere else since, i now have 2

Ok, I'll check out Pluggers. Thanks for the advice. UPS just dropped off my new Excal, I just put it together, It's charging now and I'll be off to the beach with it first thing in the morning. I can't wait to learn this machine. :) HH

Save some gold for us, congrads on the new machine..good choice!

I also use a Pluggers 3 piece shaft on my Excal, that way you can make it short for diving, or longer for wading, it's a great choice. If I get a second Excal, I might go with the long carbon fiber shaft. I had an Anderson shaft on a PI Pro and it was good, but I just like the feel and weight of the Pluggers. HH

I ordered a green over/under Anderson shaft from Kellyco. ( on back order ) but haven't received it yet. My thoughts are , if I don't like the under arm configuration , I can always use the under rod to make a hip mount , and the upper rod will still work great for that. But, I think I'm going to like it just fine. Balanced or not , I don't care for the behind elbow look. Also. I like the pre-painted green ! But, the Plugger rods are deff a better deal. I just received my knob guard from him. Should work great !
GL and HH !

Are the Anderson shafts not any good?

Hmmm, got an email from kellyco saying they we're expecting my Anderson shaft to arrive on the 25th , and that it still hasn't shown up. I went ahead and canceled my order. Looks like I'll be getting a Plugger instead. Maybe , I'll try the behind elbow after all. I could get the one where the back section comes off. That way if I don't like the behind elbow setup , I could remove that piece and just hip mount. Do the travel rods stay stiff when you swing through water ? Or is there some wiggle , where the sections go together ?

Thanks and HH

I have the Carbon Fiber rod from Anderson and I have to say it is great. I have 2 Excals, one with the stock shorty rod for diving and the other is on the Anderson carbon fiber shaft. The balance is great, it will let you hunt comfortably all day (ass opposed to the stock shaft which will wear you out after a couple of hours of land hunting). I have tried my Anderson for water hunting, but it was not as good as the stock shorty setup for several reasons. If you are going to land hunt, I highly recommend the Anderson CF shaft with the electronics behind your elbow. If you will use your Excal for diving, stick with the stock shorty shaft. I have tried several shafts/configurations and my reply is based on what works best for me. Hope this helps. -Marc

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. This is the Pluggers Dive Shaft for the Minelab Excalibur with Beach Extension, with the under shaft removed, + an end extension shaft was added so the unit is behind my elbow for Wading. For Diving, the middle Beach Extension shaft, and end extension shaft are removed, to make it shorter, and the under shaft is applied to hold the detector. This works very good for me. Well I have really liked my Anderson shafts. It looks like those Pluggers shafts are good too, I just haven't tried one so I can't say. I have had an aluminum Anderson shaft that I replaced with the carbon one and I couldn't be happier with my setup. The balance is great and the weight is excellent on the carbon fiber shaft. The Pluggers setup looks cool too though. Seems you can configure it in a variety of ways. I, however, have 2 excals, one that I keep in a "shorty" setup for diving, and one that I keep on my anderson straight shaft for everything else. This works the best for me. I'll take a couple pictures of my excals and post them up here so you can see what I am talking about. -Marc

I've had a few of Pluggers shafts and they are fantastic. I highly recommend his products.

I am though going to make my own carbon fiber shaft buying the tubing from a tubing manufacturer. A friend has a carbon fiber shaft on his excalibur and it does not ever have any problems with corrosion. It weighs a lot less than aluminum shafts plus it looks really cool too! His carbon fiber shaft is a lot stiffer than my aluminum shaft and you do notice it. The light weight also makes for a better all around hunting experience. The only down side is that carbon fiber tubing is not cheap. Plus when you cut or drill it, you need to protect yourself from the dust. A tile wet saw works well on carbon fiber tubing.

Here are a couple of pics of mine. They aren't much but I just took them quickly. If there is any part of the Anderson shaft that you want to see more closely, just let me know. I really prefer having the weight of the Excal behind my elbow vs. the "over-under" configuration as the over-under doesn't solve the weight/balance problem. I feel the Anderson puts the weight right where it needs to be and it minimizes drag in the water.

Well I finally ordered my new shaft for the excal. Emailed Plugger ( Bill ) , about what I was looking for. Basically , I wanted a balanced shaft that I could break down into both a diving shaft , or a hip mount. He started with his three piece travel shaft , then added a removable , custom under shaft ( for diving setup ) , and added his hip-mount belt and a mesh finds bag. Cost me $170.00 shipped. Thought that was fair for a shaft that can be set up in all three configurations. Now if I don't like the " behind the elbow " setup , I can hip-mount. And, if I ever get into diving , I won't have to buy a whole new shaft. Just put on the under shaft , remove the lower shaft , and replace the coil rod for the shorter one for diving ! Should be a pretty sweet setup !
