Which pin pointer do I choose

I am wanting to purchase a pin pointer but am not sure which one to get. I want to keep it under $200. small and easy to use. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. :)

Terri, I assume that you are using one of the newer model detectors! Some have a pin-point mode and some do not! If you have a straight VLF mode that is non-motion based then you do not need a pin-pointer. If your VLF mode is motion based, I have heard good things about the Vibra-probe also any big brand name should also be good!.............................HH.....................Joe

Terri I use a White's Bulls Eye 2 and a Sunray probe on my Sovereign. No matter how well a unit will pinpoint a handheld or inline probe will save time and give you the better finds that you would other wise miss. Some time you can find a used inline probe for under two hundred dollars they do perform much better than a handheld but your restricted to just one metal detector. The White's pinpointer cost should be a little over a hundred dollars, and gives you the option of using it with different detectors. The Bullseye can be set to vibrate or make a sound.I won't hunt without a pinpointer.

Thank You Ron and Joe for your replies and wisdom. I use a Whites Prizm II, but am thinking of an upgrade by spring. I had been out of the detecting hobby for about 10 yrs. and had never used a pin pointer before, woods hunting in TN. I never really needed one, just a shovel, lol. If I'm gonna hunt parks and private yards I thought I might need one.I think maybe the Whites Bullseye 2 might be the way to go for me. Thanks again guys. :)

Terry, I would suggest taking a look at the Vibraprobe 570. Until I started using one, recovery was a frustrating experience. My detector and the 570 always go out the door together. What detector are you going to upgrade to by Spring?

Hi Mid-Tenn-Digger and thanks for your advice. I am probably going to be upgrading to another White, as I have a dealer close. What part of middle Tn are you in ? I am from Davidson County, there are many nice places to hunt in that area. :)

.......................................never used one before and don't see me using one now! Also to use one, the individual must kneel or bend his knees. With severe arthritis in both kness that would be very painful for me. I have a cut-down spade with a long handle so I do not have to bend! Now if one could figure on how to use one connected to a long pole..............................then I may be interested!..................................................Merry Holidays ..................Joe

lol, once you get your PP Terri, I'll make you an arm-extender so then we'll be hunting on even turf  Then when you out-hunt me again I won't feel so bad.......getting beat by a GIRL :starwars:

Arm-Extender,Even Turf, Are you poking fun at my size again ? :poke: I call being closer to the ground an advantage. Some men enjoy being beaten by a GIRL

:devil:Oh Yea !!!!!!

lol...I would never poke fun of anyone who's "vertically impared" Not an advantage when you have a swing-width of 2 feet :detecting:

.what's that old saying..."Sticks & stones may break my bones, but whips & chains excite me"?

I been detecting for some years - about a year ago I used a pinpointer for the first time.
Now I have 6 pinpointers and I always use one - and also one of my machines has the Sunray probe.
I did well before without a pinpointer but sometimes a target can be a bit dirty and becomes a bit difficult to eyeball, or could be just in the side of a dig or a little deeper, this is where the pinpointer comes in - simplify location - speeds up progress =
UniProbe
Vibraprobe 560
Treasure Mate
and few others that's been sitting aside.
My only regret - should have got one (or more) sooner........

I agree, I got one when I got my Ace 250 & I'm glad I did. It definately is a timesaver.

I had a White's Bullseye and the switch wore out in 3 months. I had it replaced and the same thing happened again. I bought the Vibraprobe 560 a year ago and have been very happy. NO switches and it is 100% submersible!!!

Thank You Neil, that is really nice of you to share your experience. I have heard this about that particular model.

I really like the Sun-Ray DX1 probe I have on my MXT. Some guys complain about the high sensitivity of this probe, (from tip up at least 2" of the probe itself. This makes it hard to pinpoint in a hole. However, since it works in conjunction with your detector you can desensitize it with your pinpoint trigger if your detector has one. When I dig a hole and can't find the object I pass the probe around the hole while clicking my pinpointing trigger at least twice. This action reduces the pinpointing area to the tip of the probe. Manufacture claims 2"-3" pinpointing depth ability. I think they are pretty close on that claim.

Well I had hand held pinpointers & lost some of them , then I got the XI for my explorer11 from Ralph at sunray, my grand kids use the handheld now. I wount go anywhere without my XI. I think it's the best, all tones go back through your headset.

Well... I have used these pinpointers & here are my opinions....

sunray inline probe

.... XL model for the whites XLT...... works well unless you use "hot programs" which is what I use almost exclusively.... so quite useless for me. I tried the one for the explorer & it worked extremely well & was very impressed with it.

the vibraprobe (the red, black & grey model)

... people often RAVE about the vibraprobe.... and it IS an excellent product, however it interferes with my whites XLT something fierce & I just absolutely HATE the automatic on/off switch (so much so that I made an OFF switch for it so I didnt have to WAIT for the darned thing to turn off by itself). ANother annoying thing is that it would turn off by itself after setting it aside while digging & I'd have to hold it upright to turn it on again....and I'd often forget to do so. VERY annoying. Its also just too long for me. I dont need a pinpointer THAT long. However it is waterproof & VERY solidly built (cant say that about most pinpointers). A lot of people love it, however it just doesnt work well for me, but I keep it as my backup pinpointer)

The automax

.... a friend had this & I used it for a few hunts..... WAY too long/unwieldy for me & I just didnt like it.

the new whites bullseye pinpointer

..... meh.... it works ok, but the switch has a tendancy to stop working after a while..... best to replace it with a toggle or a pushbutton. I also do not like the adjustment knob on it... it moves too easily & gets accidentally moved when in use.

the old white's bullseye pinpointer [ the old black boxy kind with rubber toggle switch (or pushbutton)]

..... I have used this one the longest & have found it to be my favorite.... the rubber switch cover will eventually tear off so i replaced the switch with a simple toggle switch, replaced the green LED with a white one so it can be used as a tiny flashlight, added a belt clip off of an old tape measure so I could clip it onto my jeans pocket. The only problems I have had with it is that it can sometimes false if banged on something if the sensitivity is turned too far up (I keep it down so it doesnt false). I liked the thing so much that when it was discontinued... i bought another just in case my old one gave out. Since 1999 I have used it & its still going strong.

Note: the sherlock looks VERY interesting! I have yet to try it. I LOVE the grip indentions on the case ..... wish my old whites bullseye had those!
