which mode is the best to hunt in for depth.

i will most allways hunt in coin and jewery no mater what im huntting for because i was told that the depth is the best in this mode . is this true?

The prospecting mode is the deepest mode. There are claims of 30% more depth. Prospecting Mode is an All Metal Pin Point with an Active Auto Tune Assist, or SAT. It is the deepest but the the most stable or easiest to hunt in.

On the relic and C/J mode you will get an argument. Relic Mode is more filtered and goes just as deep but some people think the signal is reduced on the deep coins due to the added filtering. There are hunting situations when one mode better fits the job whether it is the deepest or not. Rob

Rob said it all. HH, Nancy

I have to agree with Rob, the prospecting mode will get you deeper..........

Well, I'm use to the relic mode with the trigger forward, zero Disc., gain at +2 or wide open, slight threshold hum. The only setting I hunt with where ever I am. I'm so use to it. I tried Prospect mode and just can't get use to it. JMO

I don't hunt for coins or jewelry either, but Dirtdigginuts question was is coin and jewelry the deepest? Rob

i feel like the best advise is passed on via this site and thank you all for responding to my post. yall make a new member feel right at home. thank you all and happy hunting.

I agree prospecting mode is deeper BUT. It does depend on where you have the VSAT set. Set too fast and you'll loose some depth. Set too slow and it might pick them up but you won't hear it.

Best to have it set at the reccomended setting.

Also, I believe I get deeper penetration when the ground balance is locked. Some gold fields have mineralisation that is too hot and constantly changing so instead of risking being ground balanced too high or having to turn my gain down I prefer to switch over to Relic mode.

Relic mode with NO discrimination gives my processor only two jobs to do, ground banance and detecting. Set the GB to Lock means it only has one job to do so I get more power and depth whilst detecting. This is where I believe relic matches prospecting for depth. Prospecting always has detecting and vsat running wether GB is locked or not. The circuit board in your detector runs like a computer. The less background applications running, the faster your games will play.

Aussie,
For what I know, MXT CPU still works for a correct gb, even if it is switched on lock. The only difference is that gb settings are not upgraded.

Myself when I used the MXT I found the relic mode work the best for me. My wife uses it as her main detector and she to like the relic mode will get her more depth and better ID than the coin and jewlery mode. We also both like the 6X10 coil for our detecting over the stock coil.

I am sorry you dont see me much on this fourm, but Nancy and many others else seems to do a great job keeping everyone informed on their MXT which to me is the best Whites detector I have ever used as it is easy to use and does a great job finding coins.

In applications where there is little trash or other targets, the All Metal Prospecting mode might get a little better depth. Using the Relic mode such that you're hearing the mixed mode audio (All Metal) with Discriminate mode's higher-pitched audio tone to alert you of a target can sometimes prove to be even better than Prospecting.

Some hobbyists, however, toggle so that rejected targets are suppressed and they only hear the accepted high-pitched accepted responses. So, they will basically hear the same responses that you will hear in the Coin & Jewelry mode, and I've found those two modes to have very similar depth of detection. With the first two MXT's I owned a few years ago, one was stronger in C&J than in Relic, and the other favored the Relic mode over C&J. The difference was minimal, however.

Then there is the matter of hearing preference. There are times I like to switch to Relic mode and hear the higher-pitched audio, but as a rule I search in the Coin & Jewelry mode.

Let's not forget, too, that to get the best depth we need the detector to have a 'proper' Ground Balance and concentrate on doing one job ... finding desired targets. I prefer to get a nice and proper GB at a site and then toggle to 'Lock' to hold that GB. This is especially important when searching any sit that has nails or hair pins or other iron-based trash as the MXT (and M6 and Prizm 6T) tend to try and track and adjust to the iron and the result can be a GB setting that impairs performance.

I only use auto-tracking when there are few targets at a site, good or bad.

With the recovery speed of the MXT (fast) I run in the coin/jewelry mode using the track position but when it's very trashy I'll lock it. It depends on which coil I'm using too. Many times I'll turn the discrimination right off when I'm trying to find the super deep targets. This year I've been hunting a lot of the hammered parks in this area cause the D2 is just one awesome coil. I've read that the super 12 will go deeper but that's not my experience with it, I think the D2 does a better job on the deep coins for IDing and depth. The Super 12 I'm sure will go just as deep or maybe a little deeper right in the center of the coil but the VDI numbers won't lock good like the D2.

Don't get me wrong about the Super 12 though, it's the best coil I have for the snow in winter around here. I've made excellent finds at 1 foot depths. The winter before last I dug a 1938 classring in 8 inches of snow and about 4 or 5 inches in the dirt and leaves. It's a heavy coil and in the spring summer or fall the D2 is much lighter for grassy park type areas plus I do better pinpointing & IDing the targets.
