Which MD to get hubby - new to MD

Oregongirl

New member
Hello everyone, I have been researching for several months now, trying to learn as much as I can, to make an educated decision on which MD to choose for hubby for Christmas...it's a surprise :cheekkiss: We love beachcombing (1 1/2 hours from ocean) and we live right on a river where we canoe, fish, and rockhunt every summer. We would both be new to MD. Hubby is pretty quick to figure stuff out; but, at the same time, if it's "too techy" he might lose patience and give up. The UTube vids have been GREAT in teaching me about MD'ing. I think because we would be choosing to be near/in water often, this is why I finally narrowed it down to Garrett's AT Pro. Also, because it rains a lot here; which doesn't stop us from being out on the beach, I didn't want us to have to worry about whether the equipment will be okay or not, when it's raining. My question is; how do ya'll feel about the AT Pro being the choice for a person's first-owned MD? The info and videos make it look pretty easy to learn on, but the people are already experienced with MD's, so that makes me unsure. I look forward to all your suggestions. Thank you in advance. I'm just so excited about this! :jump:

Its a great machine for a newbie because of the 2 modes it has. Standard mode is calmer and easier to learn. Once you advance you can go to Pro mode which is more sensitive and and a bit deeper.

If you have any questions or need a good price, feel free to call me. Love to help you!

Thanks, Bart

If "hubby" isn't afraid to dig and learn........the learning curve isn't too bad when your having fun, and let the "wifey" do all the digging:rofl:. "Hubby" can run it in Standard Mode a few days (weeks) (months) or (years) till he feels comfortable with it, then start experimenting with the Pro Mode a little bit till he gets the hang of it. I would think the AT Pro in your wet environment would be a wise choice:thumbup:

The AT-Pro is my first machine and the learning curve has been pretty easy for me. It's a good machine and I needed the waterproof feature as I live on a boat, it's bound to get wet!

I think your on the right track and have done your homework well. I own one and am very happy with it. I don't think you will be disappointed nor out grow it any time soon. Garret also stands behind their equipment and are quick to fix it.
Call Bart on here from Big Boys Hobbies he will treat you good too. I've gotten 2 machines from him and he answered any and all questions over several days till I made up my mind.

Speaking as someone who fried a $680 Tesoro detector by slipping on a mossy rock :sadwalk: , I love the fact that the AT Pro is waterproof. And there is a local creek I plan to do some water detecting in. As a relative newbie, I don't think that there is a more user-friendly machine out there. It's really easy to turn on and go, but has plenty of features and depth so you won't grow out of it anytime soon. I've been getting out a little bit each day and learning by coin hunting in the local parks. schools, and athletic fields, which is a nice way to get comfortable with the detector -- I can usually tell exactly what I'm going to dig before I start. If I've just dug 20 pennies and feel like leaving some for next time, I can just concentrate on the 'Silver' coins. There's always a learning curve with any machine, but I'm really pleased with the AT Pro. Today, I dug a dime up that was next to a pulltab because the detector is sensitive enough to tell that there is a good signal along with the scratchy aluminum tone. Just my 2 cents, no affiliation with Garrett

BTW, Have him buy you a Garrett Propointer for Christmas, they are indispensable ( I have a cheaper one (White's) that came with my machine, and it works OK, but I'll buy the Garrett when money permits.)

Good Luck!
William .

It has the standard mode, more geared to a beginner yet is still a deep, easy to use mode. Your husband can then learn the Pro Mode, which is a little more difficult to learn, yet when mastered, has excellent discrimination capabilities to find even more targets. This unit can be used in salted sand and water. It is also water proof, so a fall in the water or a hunt in the rain will not prevent you from continuing a hunt. It has no old fashioned knobs to make adjustments, which can wear out and add loss of depth. It has instead, push buttons to make your adjustments so you can fine tune your detector for maximum strength and discrimination capabilities. Also, made in the USA, and repaired in the USA backed by probably the best warranty in the business.

Just scroll back on this forum and see how many great rings, coins and relics which have been found using the AT series detectors. You may also want to consider some extra accessories to make your hunts easier, and more profitable in a short time using diggers, electronic Pinpointers, relic shovels etc. The dealers sponsoring this forum all carry these products. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. There are a lot of darn good hunters using the AT detectors on this forum who would be eager to answer you questions. :)

This last Spring I bought a one-dial, turn-on-and-go detector to learn with, that kept my interest for all of two weeks. So, like you I researched detectors suited for the Northwest then watched all the Garret videos. The AT PRO didn't look that hard to learn and use. So I bought one, read the manual, watched the AT Pro videos again and then went hunting. Yes, the Pro was easy, it was fun and I found stuff !!! For the first hunt out of my own yard, the Pro, my son, and I went to Wintler Park on the Columbia River. He agreed to dig everything I detected and what a fun afternoon that was especially when I got to the point I could say, "that's a bottle cap...that's a nickel...that's a quarter". That day we found my first (and best since) piece of silver jewelery and got him hooked, too.
Here, 6 months later I am still very happy to be an AT Pro owner and recommend it to anybody who has average or better comprehension skills and wants a detector that stands out in the field.

I also am new to MDing (1 month) and I purchased an AT PRO from Bart @ BigBoysHobbies and am very satisfied. Bart will be a big help as he knows his stuff.

My 1/2 cents here is to get an AT Pro. I bought mine from Bart and am real happy with it. This is my first year detecting and I started with a Ace 250 but wasn't long and I was ready to upgrade to the AT Pro. This machine will satisfy me for a long time.

Sounds like your husband is a lucky man.

Hubby will love the AT Pro. My first one did have some problems so I called Garrett, spoke with a real live person, and sent it in for repair. I tried to use my backup Fisher 1280-x while the AT Pro was in the shop but having used the AT Pro, put the Fisher back on the shelf and bought another AT Pro. Now my number one backup is an AT Pro and I am in hog heaven. Also,William-NM is right. the Garrett Propointer is a great tool to have and will shorten your digging time substantially. I've used my AT Pros quite a bit in the water and they've worked very well. As far as hunting in the rain, it can get pretty messy. You end up digging in the mud and that is no fun, especially the clean-up.
Hope this helps. Happy hunting!

AT PRO is a great machine, freshwater, beach or the local park. great choice for a beginner. Good luck and make sure he signs up here after he gets the detector. Lot of great guys here that can help with any questions. Call Bart at Bigboys, he will give you the best price and service.

Togamac, I started reading what you said and until I got a bit further realized you were talking about the ATPro you sent back, not your husband.:clapping: I really have to read slower.

...your hubby wont be disappointed,its a great detector!get the garrett pinpointer,as a stocking stuffer,i would be lost without mine.hope ya'll enjoy TH'ing!

If your hubby get a "beginner's" detector, and really enjoys the hobby, it is only a matter of time until he wishes he had an AT Pro. I say "GO FOR THE PRO"!!!
