Which is better

On a Bandido II U-Max which is better the original 8 inch coil or the newer 9x8 coil.

I couldn't tell any difference in performance but I prefer the 8 inch round coil, maybe because I just don't like the way the out of round coils look <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">.

I got this answer from more than one very honest dealer who could have easily taken my money to have me bolt on a 9x8 coil on my Bandido IIuMax to replace its stock 8" coil.
Now, when the 9x8 coil (and even the Shadow 9) coil first came out, there were certain individuals who claimed those two coils seriously outperformed the stock 8" especially where depth was concerned, but it turned out these claims were seriously over-stated.
However, that's not to say that there'd be no benefit to a 9x8 over the brown donut 8-incher -- but I think those advantages would be personal-taste in nature. A 9x8 would get you an inch more coverage per sweep, and would be react better in the shallows during very windy or wavy conditions because being an open spider coil, it would be far less susceptible to the forces of all that water moving around.
However, if you're thinking that maybe a 9x8 will get you significantly better performance and depth than the brown donut 8-incher, forget it. You won't see that kind of notable performance difference until you start going to a 10x12 coil -- and even there, there's a LOT of performance tradeoffs (and not all of them very good) vs. the old stock 8".
