I want the best all around detector witha meter mainly for coin hunting. I live in Tennessee, any help with my choice will be appreciated.

The best all around detector with a meter is a simple answer, the DFX. What is the best detector for you is a much more difficult question. The DFX is NOT for everyone. It has a very long learning curve and entire books have been written on how to best use the DFX in different conditions, hunting styles, coils and ground conditions etc.

If you want a turn on and go hunting machine the MXT, M6 or even the XLT might be your cup of tea. If you want the best, the DFX is your only choice. Since almost everything is adjustable, you must learn what "everything" does and how one adjustment affects other adjustments. One example of hundreds is ground filters. The DFX gives you your choice of 2,3,4,5,6 filters. What do you use when? Some detectors only have 2 filters and there are times 4 or 6 would give you the extra 2 or 3 inches needed to get to the really good finds. The price you pay for the best? Time, lots of time to learn. Is it worth it? It is to me. You? Think of the DFX as a custom made detector just for you and your kind of hunting. Most detectors are made to work good for most people most of the time in most conditions. Some of us are not happy with that choice.

Test as many detectors as you can and pick the one you will get the most enjoyment from. The best is not always the best for you.

That would be a big help in machine recommendation. Up towards Richardtn and in upper east Tennessee, the ground changes drastically than what we have down here in Southeast TN. He really likes the MXT and M6 up there. Where as down here they track too slow unless you like walking 3-4 yards and pumping the coil over the ground so the ground tracking can catch back up. I didn't like either MXT or M6 for anything BUT wood chip hunting for coins. The M6 was a pretty good coin killer for shallow clad.

The XLT and DFX on the other hand are two really really good units for down this way. The DFX hooked into the 3khz mode with a faster track speed works really good here. And the XLT just at its 6 khz works good too. Another popular Whites machine is the XL Pro but you'll have to really look around to find one.

Another great machine, although not a Whites, is the X-Terra 50. It really does well down this way and is a coin and relic slayer down here. And the Fisher CoinStrike is also a very very good machine.

I if you hunt schools and parks the 6000XL Pro white's is a great machine there are a ton of coils for this machine and it goes deep enough. It is very sensative to small targets hunt in discrim nails and you will find some of the smallest and thinest targets.

For relic and coin and schools and parks I would go with Compass you can put a dime under a few rusty nails and discrim out the iron and you will pick up the dime or you can not use discrim and it will avarage ou the two targets.

The DFX takes time to learn but when the light bulb finally comes on it is a great metered detector.
