I've got a light 5" bucket on about a 4' handle 90 degree with square holes for doing the dry sand...its perfect for covering long walks on dry sand, but not that good for hunting in the water digging deeper targets, for that I use a scoop I made out of an aluminum ice scoop with a wood handle, 90 degrees also. I got the idea from a poster here several years ago, and it works very well...I don't step on it and dig like a person would do with a traditional scoop, I use it like a hoe and it digs fast and wonderful in the fine sand we have up here. I get into some gravel and shells and even some river rock situations with it, and its held up good...I tinned the forward lip with alumalloy, and its seen no wear. I can see why a well made water scoop is expensive, they pay off, get one with a wood handle so you can let go of it and it floats upright. get a light small basket if you are just doing the dry...You don't want a short handle scoop, you don't want to be bending down all the time.
