which do you prefer?

It's got to be one of these

F5, AT Pro, X-Terra 705, E-Trac.

Are you limiting it to those three? It seems like you were asking an open-ended question.

n/t

Of the three, I agree the 305 would be my choice also.

Are you open to other suggestions?

i am always open to suggestions....i am trying to (like everyone) figure out the best "bang for my buck" in this hobby. my funds are limited so i dont want to buy something i will be unhappy with but at the same time i am ok with waiting and saving more to get a better machine. i call it baby steps right now. been in the hobby for several years but am now ready to concentrate more at it. any advice is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, of the three you've listed, the 305 is the best value for your money. I think it's the best $400 ID detector on the market. For $279 the Teknetics Delta is a steal and has a lot of nice features, but has a preset ground balance. If you go to $600 the Teknetics Omega would be my choice. For a beep and dig machine, Tesoro's practically giving away the Silver Umax for $250.
