Which detector to pick?

Thought the Safari was an updated and simplified version of the SE? Don't know if the Safari has any newer technology than the older SE though...

I'm in the market for a new detector, at the mo the T2 looks like best bet but could be swayed :)

Hello,

I am still in the process of deciding on a new detector myself.
It really is a tough decision. All brands and models have their strengths and weaknesses.
I am still reading forums and looking at a lot of user videos on the web. Plan to get to a detector store this coming week and
look at a few models in person.

Try downloading user manuals for all the detectors and see if you can gain some insight there.

I have been considering the V3i, Safari, SE Pro, and a few others. It really is a tough call.
Good luck.

As with most metal detectors, you pretty much get what you pay for when it comes to the Safari and the Explorer SE. If you want an easy to use and pretty much of a turn on and go fun machine, then go with the Safari. If you want a somewhat more complex machine that comes with additional features, then go with the Explorer SE. The Safari works really well in low to medium trash areas, but if you plan on hunting a lot of high trash areas, it might be best to go with the Explorer SE because it has better I.D.ing capabilities due to its additional features.

Have not used the SE so have nothing to compare to but have seen a lot of air tests of the Explorer SE and Even more for Etrac and my Safari pretty much matches air test numbers exactly to the Etrac. I read somewhere that the Etrac has more in common with the Safari then the Explorer but have also read that the Safari has an Explorer inside just different software. Either way my guess is that with equal amount of sensitivity All three machines will ID a target just as deep. My safari is dirt simple compared to my DFX. It really is a turn on and go machine. Could not be simpler to operate it has Ferrous and Conductive tones going to all metal is very close to quickmask on Etrac and Explorer. And Ferrous threshold masking is pretty easy as well with a couple of button pushes. It also has target gain which lets you adjust how loud it sings on deep targets. And last it has fast response wich they call high trash witch is good for trashy areas and low trash which improves target ID accuracy and depth. Last the Safari has something the Etrac has but Safari does not and that is full Auto Sensitivity - maybe why some say Safari is closer to Etrac the Explorer.

I can tell you out of the box sensitivity to very small targets is amazing. My first find was a single layer of foil the size of 1/4 of a dime at 6 inches and it was a strong signal. I also like that the Safari comes with the Pro Coil same coil as on Etrac and Explorer SE Pro.

I have thought about if I am missing anything not having an Explorer SE or Etrac. Short answer is yes, but the other question would be am I gaining anything and the answer to that is yes more time swinging and less time tweaking. Plus I do not think I am loosing depth or sensitivity compared to the other two. Oh yes I got my Safari for one third the price of a Etrac and it still has 1 year factory warranty.

P.S. to be fully honest I am sure someday in the future I will upgrade to either a SE Pro or Etrac. But I am not really gaining that much other then the ability to get more Target info but when the say dig all iffy targets not sure that gains me much. Maybe I will put the extra money towards a detector better at small gold or one that does not mind getting wet then I have two great detectors that complement each other.
