which detector to buy?

Hello

I am purchasing my first detector and I am struggling between Garrett GTI 2500 Pro package with two coils, etc. and Teknetics T2. Is here someone who have tested or owned both and could give me some tips. I know that T2 is much lighter than Garrett, but that's about it. Can I use them in shallow water, let's say 30-40cm deep?

Thanks for your opinions.

Ilkka from Finland

yes they can be used in shallow water as long as the electronics dont get wet, if relic hunting, i think you will be very happy with a t-2, and handle mineralized soil conditions well

The T2 is a great detector, one of the best, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a first machine.
It's complex and may be unpleasant to use for a first timer. I would recommend something simpler
to start with and then move up to the T2 once you get the basics worked out.

i think there pretty easy to use, if you never used one before, you would have nothing to compare it to, at least for relic hunting, i think other machines would be better for a park hunter, for the first time hunter, something that takes a smaller coil. seeing as there is olny the stock coil available for the t-2:ranting:

Latest news. It seems that I am NOT going to love T2. I ordered one from Kellyco one week ago and discussed about the subject several days before. Today, one week after my order, I contacted them to ask current situation. I was told that they can not deliver that and they don't know when they get them because every order to the factory is back order. Hope you understand what I mean. They said that T2 is the best in that price category and then they offered X-terra 70 instead. If T2 is the best, X-terra can then be only second best. Price is the same, though. I asked them to send me Fisher F 75 for the same price because it is quite the same device, only more expensive. They refused. And I am pissed off. They could have told me one and half weeks ago that they can not deliver it. Now I have to figure out something else then. And get one beer to calm down.

I bought my T2 from a local dealer and will never buy from the "big-house" distributors just from the service alone... They play the marketing games that I don't like because they will tack on stuff you will never use or need. Any Fisher dealer can get you the T2.

Nice thing is that they give a lot of stuff what I can sell away for the same price . T2 costs 799 everywhere, but Kellyco puts lot of other stuff along. metaldetector.cc won't. I asked. Price is same though. Problem is that there is only distributor in Finland and their delivery times are something like 3 months. I propably choose another detector.

I recently got a T-2 and love it. But for $100 less you can get an X-Terra 70 and it also is a great machine. Very deep, well built, quick recovery, and easy to learn. You can't go wrong with either machine.

Ilsaarin,
I just read your post and I am certain you made the right choice. I was a die-hard Garrett fan for years and owned a GTI-2500 for years. I was certain I had the best detector made in my hands. After several years of making good finds, but not great finds, and seeing a good friend of mine finding more with his DFX than I was with my 2500, I decided to buy a T2. It was the best treasure hunting decision I've ever made. My friend and I have been working a relic area for about 3 years now---very early Civil War site--and since getting the T2 I have been making finds going over the same ground my 2500 was just not hitting anything in. I have also found items my friend's DFX missed. I have no regrets switching to the T2. It is a superb machine and I am delighted with it.

As for water, the T2 works fine in freshwater streams----I have submerged the coil about a foot deep with no problems. It is not a good salt water detector. I've taken it to the beach and it works great in the dry sand, but once I got it over wet sand or water all I got was a lot of feedback. My Garrett is my back-up detector and I use it at the beach in the wet sand and at the water's edge.

Have fun with your T2, you will find it to be a terrific detector.

I've only been metal detecting for three years. I started with a Discovery 2200 and I got pretty good with it after learning what it was telling me. That's the first lesson and has been stated many times thoughout this forum. The detector you use is just a tool and experience makes you good with it. With the Discovery I couldn't help but think I was missing some good targets. I purchased a T2 in March from Kellyco and it arrived within a week. I must have got one of the last they had based on the previous post. My first day with it was interesting. I turned it on, set the disc to 40, tones to 3 and started moving across my lawn with it. After about five steps I stopped and took the earphones off amazed at the number of signals I was getting. It hits everything! I knew then I made the right choice on a new detector. I've been out about 25 times with it and learn something every day. I primarily coinshoot in a local park which is very trashy. The T2 separates the signals so well I can pick the good targets out. I'll close by saying that if anyone is looking to purchase a detector they cannot go wrong with a T2. It will take some time to understand what it is telling you but that goes with any detector.

Semperfi61 Bill sorry the Email i tryed to send you didint go, So I,ll do it here. No I havint been on a beach yet. and the T2 will ID differant metal
targets. tinfoil, iron, bottol caps you will get to know, can slaw, and so on. Take a Q coin and put in the ground 4-5'' deep. the ground will be disturbed
but wont make much differance. Start out with the #1 tone setting and scan coin. Then move up the tone scale and pick the tone you like best.
Try them ALL and you will know. HH Don Have a good day and good luck to you.

PS Semperfi61 Yes I use headphones. And I am not trying to infuance you or any one eles on the brand I use. But I use Sunray PRO. and have used
other brands but find the Sunrays are the best fo the T2. HH don
