Which coil would be the better choice for Gold hunting?

Mick in Dubbo

I've got a couple that I know, who are selling their home to start travelling around the country. They are taking up detecting and will be hunting both coins and gold. I'm recommending the X-Terra 70 as the best choice, but not too sure on which coil would be best. Before the 6in coils, I would have recommended the 5x10 high frequency coil hands down. My suspicions are though, that the 6in DD coil, due to it being more sensitive, seeing less ground and still having plenty of punch, may actually be a better choice. Not to mention, waterproof.
While on the subject of the 6 in coils; just wondering, when you go into pinpoint mode, do they both still give off a signal above the coil? The reason I'm asking, is that the Aces sniper coil doesn't give off a signal, and is very handy for hunting around play equipment and allowing more recoveries to be made.
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

I'd say the 5x10" because there's better ground coverage and it's a bit easier to get the tip into places. If they're going to hunt in the water, go for the other HF DD's. Actually, if they have the money, getting both the 10.5" round and 6" HF DD's would probably be the best bet. The 5x10 would make for a good compromise for the budget minded. ..Willy.

Its light, easy to move in and out of tight areas, super sensitive and durable. If there hunting big flat areas the round DD would be a great choice but for everyday use on the gold fields I use the Elliptical. I have the 6" DD HF coil as well but only use it in high trash areas in all metal mode and my coin mode. I have also been enjoying the underwater use of the 6" in creeks with good success.
Cheers!

I certainly agree with Willy & Nugget71 here.
The Elliptical 5x10" HF DD and the 6" HF DD are the best two coils for the job if coins and gold are both sought.

*The Elliptical gives a wider range and good depth. Especially in the noisy soils that gold can be found in.
*The smaller 6" HF DD is waterproofed and is better suited for this purpose as it works well in creeks and in finding very small gold.

I have both and am heading to the gold fields again shortly. I'll be using the Elliptical for the ground scanning and the 6" for the creeks.
If you had to get just one coil, Id' be hard pressed if you lived at the beach... but I'd probably suggest the elliptical.

Nugget71, do you try to ID with your coil in All Metal? Is that WHY you use All Metal... so you CAN properly ID the Target before digging?
