Which coil for relics? Civil war.

I love that 6x10 dd for relics. Cant go wrong. CCH.

If mineralization is not an issue the 950 or Super 12" will get you more depth over a DD/SEF coil, the DD coils excel in very mineralized ground especially in trashy mineralized ground. The 6X10 is a good general use coil but depth suffers due to it's 6 inch width.... it is said the the depth is equivalent to a 6 inch concentric, yet you can still get good coverage. The concentric coils like the 950 are also more stable and less prone to EMI. The other advantage of the D2 or EX 10" DD would be better separation of targets.

Electromagnetic interference..... power lines, transformers electric fences and the like.

I use the 10"DD coil for relic hunting and very old sites where there could be deep targets. I have detected my deepest targets with the 10"DD. It also air tests very deep. IMHO it is the best for relic hunting.

I have both 6x10 and the 10x12 SEF coil and I mainly use the SEF coil as I feel it does better. That 10"DD coil is awesome as well and I would recommend it as well.

i just measured my lesche, and the deepest coin i have dug with the 6x10 is six and one half inches, to the point of my lesche believe it or not. I got at least an inch and a half more with the whites 12, and yes, it will separate a bit, you have to try it, don't buy into all the small coil stuff till you have tried the large. The 12x15 sef from kellyco yielded my deepest coin, a large cent at 9 inches. I had been over that spot with the 12 at least six times....five feet away, while the machine was "in the zone" i got a wheat at 8.5"...funny thing i have found out about the larger coils is that with less sensitivity, the ground balance is running smoother.. i have dug numerous deep wheats at 8 inches with this coil. it is heavy...however, i gotta tell ya, if you are hunting fields with little trash shallower than say five inches, this thing will separate!!!! if i was in a soybean, corn field, fallow field, i would hunt the larger coil...period...an iffy at 6.5 is not as promising as an iffy at eight...you'll hear the scratch.

[size=large]not to take from the others but i'd listen to cajun, larry and d&p. these guys have a great many years hunting relics and trying the differant coils.

Is 32 years enough hunting experience???

[size=large]i have to imagine that lots of others have as much or more than 32. that's 31 more than me. i just seem to see their post more often and watch more of cajun's videos on you tube than TNreb. as stated "not to take from the others".

No problem. And you are correct that they are a great resource to ask questions and listen to. When I started in 1979 there were no websites to get info like there is today. I had to teach myself to listen to the sounds and different tones. To most people the sounds all sounded alike but after time you learn that they actually were different. Keep asking your questions as it is the fastest way to learn and good luck with your hunting.

[size=large]i hear ya TNreb. my hearing is poor. none in r/ ear. but know what yur saying. seems to be the main theme among the experienced. it's just harder for the hearing impaired. like learning to drive a stick shift before an automatic. or using a pensil and your head instead of a computer or calculator.the older detectorist learned the sounds. i'm 61 but still will sit at the knee of those who know more.
good hunting to all.

I've used the 10" DD, the 6x10 DD and the 12" Super coil. If mineralization is not an issue, the 12" will get you more depth, but man o man will that thing work on your arm! I like the 10" DD for relics due to its decent depth and separation capabilities, weight, and how it deals w/mineralization. The 6 x 10 is also good if trash is an issue. I use that one on old homesites - I really like it for that.

I rarely use the 12" due to the weight. Tried it last week at the beach and, frankly, it's just way too heavy for me.
