Which Coil for Nugget Shooting?

lrsafari

New member
Ok, new to the forum, and just getting back into prospecting/detecting.

So, I finally think I have budget enough to get an MXT. The only remaining question which coil for nugget shooting?

I know there is the Whites Eclipse Shooter DD (4x6)

or

4.5 x 7" EXcelerator Searchcoil.

I live in the Sacramento area, so seemingly enough places to try it out.

AND..... if anyone has an MXT they are selling in my region, let me know.

Thanks for the assist,

-Scott

Hi Scott,
My two favorite nugget hunting coils for the MXT are the 6x10 Eclipse and the 4x6 shooter. The 6x10 will cover more ground and is very sensitive to small gold. The 4x6 shooter is a little bit more sensitive to small gold but not by much, it would be great around the American river to separate trash and fishing sinkers though. I usually use the shooter for coin hunting in trashy areas. I have owned a few Excellerator coils and did not like them and sold them within a few weeks.

John,

Thanks for the info. Now for a little followup.

So if I can only afford 1 additional coil, it should be the 4x6 Shooter or the 6x10? My only though was that the 4x6 would get into small crevices, but I do like the ability to scan larger areas with the 6x10.

Thanks again and have a great afternoon,

Scott

Hi Scott,
Well your right about the shooter getting into small areas and crevices, but it will not cover as much ground as the Eclipse. I like the 950 coil for most of my hunting, but when it comes to gold hunting and I could only afford one coil I would go with the Eclipse. Find some gold and trade the gold in for a shooter coil. I will send you a PM on some places to hunt in and around Sac for gold if you are not familiar.

Thanks for the great info. I know a guy in Folsom who has a 6x10 for $110, whichs sounds like a pretty good deal. If I can find an MXT for the right price, at least I know which coil to get.

Thaks again and have a great weekend,

-Scott

Just remember the shooter is for shooting, like a wiper blade on your windshield its thin and narrow path will see in betwix junk more better. Shell out the bucks and get both. You can always sell them if you change your mind cause there is a market for them. My collection of coils just keeps growing and I enjoy each and every one. When the site changes so does my coil.

Sounds like the 6x10 Whites, then if the budget allows the 3x6 Whiyes.

Excellent advice and thanks for the info.

Next, after I get the machine, I will be looking for advice on seting up for nugget shooting. I know it has a mode for that, but I read in another post that the relic mode might have some advantages.

Have a great one,

-Scott

Scott
did you ever find your MXT. hope you had better luck than I.
I am also in Sacramento, (Citrus Heights), looking to find an
mxt for the nugget shooting. if you've heard of any others
available let me know. thanks
Walt

In an earlier post I was told to get a 4x6 DD coil. Good advice, but which one? Whites sells one and then I see another company is selling a 4.5 x 7" EXcelerator Searchcoil which they claim is better and deeper. Are there other coils too that I should consider? What do you suggest?
