Which coil for detecting in a Corn Field.

JASONSPAZ1

I will be going to do some detecting in a corn field. I have not seen the field but was told there are lots of old stocks left strewn about. I just am trying to figure out if I should use my Sovereign GT, the Sunray S-8 or the SEF 12x10.
I would imagine that there will be much corn stubble as well. I have to pack light and I really do not want to lug both coils on the trip. Any advice?

I'd use the 12x10 because it will cover more ground, but then again the 8" coil will be easier to move around in it with. I've found the 12x10 actually gets hung up less in the woods than the stock 10" coil. The stock coil has more open area for branches and such to get into.

The few corn fields i have done the bigger coils don't work well as you cant get too close to the ground and have to swing it higher as it keeps snagging on the corn stocks or stubble. Which ever coils you decide try to use I would see if I could make a cover that is solid so it will not snag on the stubble. I had a solid cover for my S-12 that I got extra cover that was solid and made it easy to use in areas where there was stubble or weeds and no snagging.
The only Farm fields around ND that will do any good is if there was a old ballfeild or a park from years ago, the one that had old farmsteads and now just a Field seem to loaded with iron and other trash. Like it was said before the areas you find coins in are those where many people have been at over the years where they could spend money as some of it get lost, if they don't carry money they can not lose it.

Good luck

Rick

IMHO I would go with the S-8 because it will likely be able to swing closer to the ground and around stalks as opposed to the SEF which may need to hover over stalks and stubble. You may get the same depth from both coils considering this possibility. HH. Let us know how you do. Matt

Well figure you could find anything to 12" deep i hear what rick is saying if the feild is not disced flat a big coil can be dificult because you have to lift it so high to avoid the stalks or big clumps of dirt in that case the 10" coil is great if its flat why i like the 15" WOT that shat i am using now but when it gets bumpy the 10" and i hunt in pinpont and check in Disc

I hunted a good many fields and used the 12X10.... but id recommend the smaller coil. You either are 4" about the ground or between the stalks with the large coil and MISS a lot of targets. So you are loosing 4 inches of depth, you get better separation and can really work the field better. The MLs dont like a lot of gap between the coil and dirt and there will be Hot rocks in most fields. There is just going to be advantages with that smaller coil especially if you find a rich target area that you want to work.

if you can only take one i guess the 8 inch,,but if it was me i would take both and also a 5 inch in case you find a trashy area.....i own a 10a,5,and 15 inch..i acually prefer the wot for farm field hunting..if targets are few and far batween you wont miss much,,however if you get into a trashy area you will miss alot due to masking...i often take an extra belt along with and strap the extra coil to my body just in case i feel the need to change coils...its a little bit of a pain but it allows me to work hands free and not worry about setting it down somewhere and forgetting it as it is already strapped to me...

Spacing of the corn is thirty inches between rows, when i used my sovereign with the s -12 it felt like I was banging the crap out of my elbow and shoulder. With the smaller coil it should not be quite as bad . Also if you put a piece of cardboard on the coil cover and zip tie it on that should eliminate the stalks going between the cover JMHO, Good Luck ,Ezra.

Another good idea is that plastic material that a lot of signs are made of. It looks like carboard (ribbed air space in between the two sides just like cardboard), but it's waterproof and VERY durable. Zip tie it to the coil. Melt out the tip tie holes as that makes it harder for the hole to rip. It's also slick and smooth for sliding over stuff. Watch for weight loss signs or other ones that have been illegaly stuck on telephone poles or in the grass on tree lawns near corners and such. Those things aren't supposed to be there in most cities so you'll be doing the city a favor if they aren't. Just don't touch political signs as I think that's a felony.
