Which coil for beach hunting

Steve from Ohio

New member
I've tricked out my Excalibur with the straight shaft, Ikelite connector and Gray Ghost headphones.

I'm looking to cover more ground out of the water on the beaches in the dry and wet sand at low tide. Will be doing the coil installation myself.

Any recommendations for the best coil to use?

I've been looking at the Sunray Intruder S-12 or the 12 x 15 SEF coil.

Anyone have any experience with these two coils on the Excalibur?

I went to the 15" WOT from a 14" Excelerator EQ2 on my SOV GT and found it covered sooo much more, I now have one on my Excal. Today is the first full day of use on the Excal and I love it. I only hunt beach wet and dry.
The WOT worked just like the one on my SOV GT. I did a hard wire applacation, was a snap.

Hi Larry.

Did you get everything done on your Excalibur? Hope your headphone conversion went O-K.

I'm looking forward to getting a larger coil for greater coverage in certain areas. I would like to be able to switch coils and use an 8 inch tornado in the water and then use a larger coil in the dry sand and wet sand on the beaches. I know Gulfhunter says that you should not switch coils because of leakage. I have an idea that I am going to try in regards to switching coils. I think it will work fine without worrying about leaks.

I have heard that going too large a coil can be problematic in that you can't run up the sensitivity enough without it going bonkers in certain soils.

I just tried the using pin point for searching which is on the Oldbeachnut you tube video and it works really well in open field hunting. I have not tried it on the beaches yet. That will be soon. Found a 1912 Lincoln at a local park down 14 inches measured using the pin point method. It had a nice green halo around it and that is probably why it showed up so well. It got so windy and cold that I had to stop hunting. Plus it was getting dark and I started really late.

Thanks Bling for the comment. I think it is between the WOT and the S-12. I have heard a lot lately about the SEF 12x15 and will be looking a little more yet before I decide.

Thanks for the feedback!

Let me know which choice you make on that coil and post some pic's for us on the install of it. Thinking about a 12inch for the wet sand on another excal. Gotta try n keep up with you young guys! HH.........OBN

Yes Steve,
I got the 15" WOT hard wired up and the GG hard wired in. I decided against the removable connection for the headphones and I did make sure the headphones can't be pulled out by using some tie wraps.
I must add one caveat to using the 15" WOT coil on my Sov GT or the Excal.
I do not use it anywhere other than the beach and then only in the wet sand or underwater. I have found when using it on my Sov GT the 15" WOT is too sensitive to use around any trashy areas, like where campfires were or a lot of stuff left over from campers...for those type conditions I use the 10" DD and if real bad with trash I might even swap to a 6".
My Excal is just for underwater or wading work and is never to be used for anything else, unless for backup. I am lucky that the beach I hunt does not have a lot of trash at the waterline or in the water, it is all in dry sand where the ORV run or campers have parked over the years. The park is 65,000 acres with over 10 miles of beach/surf to hunt.

Larry

I have 2 Sov GTs, one is water proofed. I use the WOT on both of them and it is the only coil I use in the water. I use a harness on the shaft of both Sovs and my backup water detector my Excal, for me there is no difference using the 15" WOT in the water and the stock 10" EXCEPT, I can cover so much more area and depth. I have been using the WOT in the water for over a year now and I love it................................

Good luck and good hunting.
