For me the 10" coil is the perfect size. I can cover some ground with it an I can still swing it in the water. I would not like to swing a bigger coil in the water. Some guys out there can . I also think pinpointing in the water with anything bigger gets to be more difficult. Out of the water in the sand I can see where a larger coil would be better. But I have the Sovereign for that. Now I realize that taking two detectors on the beach doesn't quite make sense. But I have a fairly good idea where I will hunt that day and I will take what I need.

So I have the 10" coil on the Excal and that is good enough for me. But switching out those blasted yellow headphones is on my list of things to get done. Switching to the wife's wader headphones after wearing those yellow bastards was almost orgasmic.

Hi Goodmore,
What coil or coils do you use on your Sov?

Best Regards,
Steve

Hello John, glad you are doing well. I agree with Goodmore the 10 inch works for me. In the water the 10 inch works great easy to pin-point with and as long as my Excal is working good I'm not changing nothing. On dry sand those big garbage can lids cover the ground but I hunt in the water mostly. Hope you get back down to Florida soon. HH :minelab:

Stock 10" coil on my Excal. Easier to swing with here on the west coast with lots of waves coming in and out and easier to pinpoint with also.
15" w.o.t. trash can coil on my Sovereign GT when working dry sand. My w.o.t coil will pick up signals just outside my swing range so I know there is a target real close by. Easy to pinpoint with also but real sensitive to electrical interference. Great coil on big open beaches. Haven't tried S.E.F coils though.

I just recently picked up two coils here on the forum. The Excelerator 16 inch (which is just gigantic) and the Sunray 12".

I really don't expect more depth. It was more about coverage. I still want to do some tests between these two coils for sensitivity to earrings and such. I have been busy spraying them with bed liner spray. I suspect that I will be using the 12" Sunray on the Sovereign. There needs to be a balance between coverage and small gold.

Goodmore ,
I'd like to hear reports on these two coils ..... Every SunRay coil that I've used, I've really liked ....They're quiet , and go deep !! ...The smaller coils ( S-5 and S-8 ) but can't speak for the S-12 seperate really well especially in trssh which may not help you much on the beach ....Looking at a Kellyco chart , they show the various depths of the coils , and they show the depth of the SEF coil being deeper than the Excelerator coil .....??????.....Enquring minds want to know !!.....Thanks, Jim

I have WOT/s on 2 of my excals I live in FL and hunt the water exclusively. Have no problem swinging or pinpointing targets IMHO Bigger is better

ive too had great results with the stock coil but ive read on this forum and seen others with larger coils on there excal 2 and just really wondered is it really a need to change coil??
ok heres another question, as to the head phones, whos headphones would you use to change the stock ones?? must be water proof too, please let me know
thanks to all

10" coil is perfect. 15x12 is too much drag for me but is OK if you are a fan of very slow sweep speeds. I'm not, so with my more medium sweep speed I found the 15x12 had a little too much drag and wore my arm out a bit. 12x10, S-12, or 10" stock coil should be about equal in drag I bet. Any one of those is a good choice probably. I love my 15x12 on the land and it's my every day coil for that, but in the water it's the stock 10" on my GT until I try a 12x10 or S-12 for that.
