which 9 volt batteries give the best service life ?

I've changed over to Energizer's 9v batteries due to having a Duracell 9v explode in a smoke detector this Summer. The same Duracell 9v battery exploded two additional times after I had removed it from the smoke detector. (Yes... the battery was installed in the smoke detector correctly. 
)
If you do a search for exploding Duracell 9v batteries on the internet you will find complaints indicating that Duracell is not the most customer service friendly company to deal with on issues related to exploding batteries.

I just bought a huge pack of Duracell batteries at one of the "Big Box" discount club stores. One of the AA's was leaking in the box and two
of them in my Nikon shirtpocket digital camera only gave me 6 pictures. Not a good deal. Sorry Duracell. l Don't know about the 9V ones.
