Which 8 inch coil?

TXhunter

New member
I am wanting to get the new Explorer SE and want to also order it with an 8 inch coil.

What are the differences between the Minelab and Sunray coils? I mainly coin hunt in trashy areas and wonder which would be best.

Thanks

I've had and used both. Could not see much difference in depth but the big thing you will notice is the weight! I don't have the numbers but think the Sun Ray is about 1/4 lighter. Makes a big difference to your arm on a full day of coin shooting. New ones are kind of pricey unless you can find a good on a used one.

I havent used the minelab 8 but the Sunray on my EX II is my main coil. So much easier to drag around than the heavy 10". Im not sure I lost all that much depth either. If it were me......Id buy another Sunray in a second.

I have both stock 10 and 8 inch coils from Minelab. The Sun Ray 8 inch is much lighter and is now my main coil. I have used this coil on the wet sands on the beach with no problem. I also have the Sun Ray 5 inch that is great for parks with a lot of trash.

I have used almost every coil for the Explorer and still have the Sun Ray X12,X8 and the 5" I also have the Joey along with the factory coils at one time I even had a WOT, every coil has its place in my arsenal but I would honestly say that I use the X8 85% of the time.
