Which 8" coil is best for the XS?

Will probably be looking at the 8" coil for my next explorer purchase, and was wondering if any studies are underway comparing the different manufacturers of the 8" coils for the XS. Thanks in advance.

I don't know which is better, I don't have either one.But I do know from reading these forums for a while that the Sunray coil is a full 8inches and quite a bit lighter than the minelab, which I am pretty sure is 7 1/4 " The reason I am going to get the sunray when I can afford it is that Ralph at Sunray always answers any questions on the forums and I believe is a tr hunter also.I will own every coil available when I can but my first one will be the Sunray.
Jim has both coils and as soon as the weather cooperates more I am sure he will give us a very in depth study on how the two compare.
Sorry I can't help anymore than that.

You might want to call Kellyco and ask them about the Minelab coil. I think she said it had MPS which COULD mean multi period sensing.
If that is true... WOW...that would put the ML coil in a class of its own. Minelab will have broken the code to ground with its Explorer.
Check it out.

But all they would do is tell you an answer to sell what they have in stock...better to wait for reliable reports from real users...

Hi Greg, only have had the Minelab coil out 4 or 5 times so far.. I can tell you a few things I know for sure.. The minelab is noticably heavier(but not enough to really bother me) and about a half inch in diameter smaller. I also know the minelab is more apt to report a large target on a true large target than the Sunray.. in other words the Sunray seems to have to be closer to a large target for the large target alert to go off. This can be a blessing on both sides I suppose.. The sunray may have an edge in seeing something good next to a large target, while the Minelab allows you to move on if you want by letting you know its large sooner. As for depth So far while having both coils in the field one hasnt seen anything the other didnt, but again since getting the ML havent come across anything deeper than 9 inches with either coil. I am pretty certain they are both going to be fairly close in depth capabilities, at least close enough that depth shouldnt be the final factor in the decision of which to buy. Also since they really are different sizes at least thats enough of a reason for me to use both. If you want a bit more coverage and less weight get the sunray.. if you prefer a slightly smaller coil and the extra 6 or 7 ounces doesnt bother you get the minelab. Of course if your on a limited budget the minelab is the cheaper priced coil and comes with the spare lower rod.. at least now it does.. One thing I should say is I have found something everytime out with the ML in areas I considered pretty much done in and the last time out with it found quite a bit of stuff in these areas.. dont know if its the frozen ground or I was hunting slower cause I was cold And to be fair I have found stuff with the Sunray in the same type areas that amazed me that any stuff was left.. bottom line? I dont really know yet I like them both, but he wieght factor and slight coverage advantage leads me to think I will use the X8 more often.....

Greg
I have used the Sunray coil for a short time now and love the great seperation and fantastic depth. I hunt a pre-1800's dump site here in Ft. Worth and have used the 5 inch sunray coil along with the factory 10 inch, with the sunray 8 inch coil I have pulled targets from 8 to 10 inch range with no problem. The 10 inch coil did fine but the 8 inch produced the best and deepest finds in the heavy iron. Pin-points great too. The depth meter does read a little off from the true depth, but who cares if your finding fun stuff.

What is the large target alert? Is that the same as the overload warble?

I guess either will be all right, but from all of your advices, right now I would probably go with the sunray coil, but I just got the XS, and might be putting the cart before the horse. I need to master the machine first, then, in a few more months I will be ready (experience wise and money wise) to change coils.
Thanks for the excellent advice.

From the post I believe it is easier to master pinpointing with the smaller coil,I don't have much problem pinpointing but the targets that I do are very frustrating

I can't pinpoint at all even with SunRay's great little 5" coil when the deep switch is on, but with it off I can pinpoint a coin on edge with the SunRay or the ML 10.5" dead center every time.
If I could only have one Aux. coil I would get the WOT. If I could only have 4 Aux. coils I would get them all.
