Where's Gravedigger Max ?

dirt doctor

Well-known member
I've been standing by waiting to see some videos of his adventures at the beach . Hope everything is ok .

I believe max sold his CTX so you have to you tube him!

What was the reason he sold his CTX?

Max and quite a few others sold or traded in the CTX as far as a beach hunting goes. I am still giving it a chance to shine. The CTX seems to not like heavy wave action and Max and others north east coast hunters like myself have normally heavy waves daily. We can't get the 3030 to tone down its falsing. I have tried some new setting and it has for the most part quited down. I had some falsing in the water last night in waist deep, the ocean was calm. Fresh water and lakes the 3030 does very well. It might just take me a while to master the machine in the ocean enviorment. I still only have 160 hrs hunting with it. I still need more time!

Max is back in love with his Excalibur and finding gold again which he struggled with using the CTX, you may find him on the Excal forum.

BC thanks for giving the CTX a chance, if you find the answer; you will be able to help the full and part time or occasional beach hunters.

I personally feel most of the problem comes from us older hunters having started detecting with BFO detectors. It has always been a struggle to keep up with the new kid on the block. Many of us old heads never changed up in the late 80's and into the 90's and then did learn the newer detectors. In the last 10 years things have advanced so quickly that I never kept up This is my first computer type detector. All the other detectors I have ever use have told me what's in the ground by tone and a meter. The CTX 3030 I told it what I wanted the target to sound like. I have an issue with that. I am struggling with the targets not being of different strengths and all sounding the same depth! Lots of the gold I have ever dug came from just a flutter in the threshold. With the 3030 the threshold is hard to hear without raising it very high. This has always been a bad thing with other Minelab machines I have been told that it still applies? I laugh each time I see a post that says the sweet sound of silver, well you could make it sound bad too and its still silver. I first thought that being able to chage the tones was great I don't now.Since I turned off Deep On and managed my Gain I finally can hear the different between deep and shallow targets. This is not a good thing as I could be missing deep targets Here's what I have done to help me along. I set the User Button up on another program of my choice that I can test what I am hearing in two different programs. This allows me to be comfortable with the lack of signal dept I get with the gain too high. If I loose the target in one of the programs I can adjust the 3030 to allow it. Then I dig it to see just what I would have missed. That is one great feature to be able to switch between many programs with a flick of a button! I am still having issues with a good headphone combination. The water proof GG are not sound blocking enought for my beaches as we have large crashing waves. When I switched to the gold master headphones I could not believe what I couldn't hear before. Others will never know what they are missing as they can't hear the target. I am going to wire a set on the 3030 soon.In the mean time I am using the Black Widows as they provide the noise blocking to lower the threshold and volume by nearly half. I am still popping gold hear and there and ther isn't alot to be had these days so I can't say it the machine. Its always the conditions ans they always have the last say!

BC, you know you can change the pitch on the threshold so you can hear it better? Maybe make it a little deeper of a tone.

Ya its not that, it the outside noise, and adjustments at this point. If your digging the loud bongs that you hear your missing the good stuff! Gold and Plat is an elusive creatures, Fresh drops are easy targets but the real gold is deep. I just have to learn to get the 3030 to go deep, in my mind. The three rings I dug thus far with the 3030 were barely 10 inches. That's not going to cut it in my book. After I pluck one from 16 inches I'll be happy. The watch this week was deep but it was big target, sound like a can

And what I can't stand in the most is the noise noise noise noise!

Couldn't resist after I read you post.

Buried..why wouldnt you want to hear the deeper targets being more louder? I like hunting with deep on so all of the targets sound the same. With deep OFF you risk losing some of the deeper targets due to outside noise and louder shallower signals

I guess I should say its OK for the deep targets to sound like a shallow target just not what I been use too for 38 plus years. Low barely audible murmurs are what dreams have been made from, in my book.Gold rings on the beach head for the hard pan right after they get dropped. Even freshly lost ring will be found at 6 to 8 inches in hours. The three rings I have dug with the 3030 were all only 6 to 10 inches. This is just not what I am use too. The big ring in my TDI chart I posted was 22 inches and was just the tinniest of threshold break. After 1 big scoop I had a tone (Excal) I just haven't seen this with the 3030. There is no such thing as threshold breaks.Because you can barley hear the threshold over waves. (at the beginning) I have new headphones now. Now in a park setting I hear the threshold just waiting to find a deep target. I think deep is 16 inches in the wet sand. I have not dug anything deeper then 10 inches. To me the 3030 acks like a beep and dig machine with different tones. Tones that are artificially made by the user! I am thinking this isn't coming off sound right?
