Where would a Platinum Ring ring in?

Stogger

Member
Hi All. I was searching this weekend in the mountains to help a woman find her platinum/diamond engagement ring (antique; was her grandmother's) that she believes she lost along the trail. Since any signals along the trail and at a campsite were few, I just dug everything. So far, we have not found the ring. Does anyone have an idea where a platinum ring would normally "ring in"?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
Pretty low...12:04, 12:07 ...ish...and pretty faint on those small women's rings.
Keep in mind also, that a swinging arm on a trail can throw a ring off to the side, and a mountain trail is a lot of area to cover.
You have a daunting task.

Good Luck,
mike

Pretty much the same as a gold one of similar size...This would be important to know...how big was it? A tiny 2gr or a larger 4? either way like Trojdor stated, its gonna be a tough thing to find, so call her back for more details...for instance, I'd want to know what hand she was wearing it on? I'm assuming her left, but you should ask...also, when did she notice it was missing? On the way up or down? Anything else? Yes, did she drop off to the side of the trail to relieve herself, pick up a pinecone, or anything like that? Any distinguishing features of the trail that she remembers? Hell, it could be right where their car was parked, so ask that too...

One other thing, hunting for a "think I lost" ring can be a fools errand...so I ask a lot of questions, but the answers may not be accurate.

I hunted for a ring a few winters back the Woman SWORE she lost at the local sledding hill taking her gloves off in one small area to take pictures of her kids...I combed that whole damn hill for days, sub zero and windy at 5am....a few months later, when all the snow thawed, she found it out on her front walk at home!

Still, its an adventure, so you gotta try, you will never find it by not trying...who knows? Good Luck!

Mike and Mud. Thanks for the information! This is a larger ring that she thinks she lost when she took her gloves off. She is not 100% sure it is lost on the trail (but sure enough for her to drive 2 hours one-way to meet with me to go over her tracks...in freezing conditions). Mike, that is what I'm going to do today, expand the search a good bit out to the sides of the trail. If she dropped it on the gravel where she parked, most likely someone else found it. Mud, thanks for the advice. We reviewed her tracks in detail, she remembered most of her stops to take pictures and I searched these immediate areas. Now I need to expand it...and today will be warmer! Thanks again...I had no way of knowing it would ring in similar to gold. The ground is frozen solid; makes for interesting digging.

Maybe I should make this a separate post but the detector did well in these cold conditions! The lowest temp was 18F. The interference canceling worked very well. I have no idea what is out there to cause the interference but the canceling button works. Also the battery lasted 5 hours (the detector and wireless batteries). The arm strap didn't stay put; maybe this is to be expected in cold temps. Thanks again, I really appreciate your advice and info.

Ive found a few rings for people who loose them in the snow or cold temps. When they remove there gloves the ring can be more than just dropped but tends to toss out, I found one about 5 feet from where she parked and removed her gloves. You may be happy to know that the machine worked right through the snow. I returned her ring for her and it only took me about 1 hour to find it.

good luck.

All depends on the size. The greater the mass the greater the conductivity. Just like gold rings.
