Where to Start

It looks like I am going to get permission to detect in a old school building. The building has been abandoned since the late sixties. I will have the whole place to myself but time may be limited by weather and work schedule. Anyway what area would you start searching? Inside the building, playground, around the entrances, along the parking lot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hello jdstawker, i wouldnt go inside the old school unless you were permitted to. take a minute when you first get there with machine in hand, and start to visualize how things happened there. it will all come to you... then proceed my friend to deplete the ground of all of the goodies! take your time, dont rush, keep the coil low and slow and you will be rewarded! you can start at any one of the four corners of the property and search and swing your way toward the building. just dont forget where youve been, and overlap your swings. you can expect to find more adult oriented stuff in the front of the school, and more child oriented stuff in the rear of the school. the same holds true for a typical house yard hunt. make sure to cover your holes and not leave any messes. a good clean hunt at the ol schoolhouse could easily lead to other places to go. good luck, and hh,

For sure don't miss the play areas.

What ever money the rug rats had

was silver and no telling what els.

Don't be discouraged if some one

has beat you to it. There will still

good things to find.

Hope you have good success.

Don't hurry even if you get in a hurry.

You'll just miss targets.

HH,

Thanks for the advice. Going inside vs staying outside is fuzzy. three of the four walls of the building have come down already and they took the roof off when they abandoned the building. Liability I guess.

I cannot see too much to be had inside the school, unless it is one of the really old dirt floor types (Most of these have deteriorated to the point of not standing anymore)??? if you do get inside, I think it would be more productive to hunt with your eyes and brain than with a detector...if there are covered registers (radiators), check those out...the younger kiddies love to stuff items into strange places. Outside, I would suggest hunting any visible tot lots, the grassy expanses, and under any good sized trees...Kids love to climb trees. In a large area, take it in sections...look at the layout, then picture a grid in your mind...I usually hunt a 100 by 20 yard section a day, and pound it hard, going over it like 3 times...The next day, I move over to the next 100x20 area...You would be surprised at what I missed on a first pass over an area...It all depends on how your coil crosses your target I guess...
