Where to set Threshold

When teaching S-1 ~ S~6 where should the threshold be set? Min., Max., or somewhere in between?
When actually running in the field where should the threshold be set? I usually bump it up until I start to hear a hum and then I bump it up one more notch. What works best for you or is it different for different soil types or trashy vs. non-trashy areas?
 
The threshold should run where you just start to hear the hum. Some like to drop it down one notch and run silent. No reason that I know of to run the theshold higher.
