Where to set the threshold?

P48 -The purpose of the threshold is often confused, or at least it seems to me to be, with sensitivity. Consider this and assume I have the headphones on that came with the detector and adjust the threshold to the slightest hum then turn it down to just below sound. We would say I have silent search and no threshold. However, not take a better set of headphone and connect it to the output and we now have a threshold with no adjustment to the threshold pad! Was there are was there not a threshold?

If we have the pad set so the digital indication is less than 8 we will not hear a threshold with most headphones but what if we have a more expensive piece of equipment, say a chromatic tuner, connected to the headphone output then guess what there still is a sound but we cannot hear it even though the tuner can register the sound.

The threshold is set in relationship to the individual user, the headphone used or if the speaker is used. The threshold should be set to highlight the variations in signals responses.
