Where to Prospect/Relic Hunt in Eastern Nevada?

HendersonHunter

Two of my friends and I are going to take a road trip thru eastern Nevada (up highway 95) from Las Vegas to Ely. We are planning on about 5-8 days for our trip. Would like to do some panning, metal detecting and rock hounding. The major place I'm aware of is Osceola, then up near Ely.

Does anyone have any other locations including indian tears, agate fields, gold, garnets, etc?

Thanks,

HendersonHunter

Goggle Garnet Hill, Ely. I believe it is on the State map too. Be very careful around Osceola. It is heavily claimed & some of the characters I've seen out there reminds me of the movie "Deliverance". Egan Pass in Cherry Creek had some placer gold in the 1800's. I haven't found any yet. Cherry Creek is a living ghost town. Many buildings are protected by Federal law. I've been there doing photography out there over the past 8 years; usually 4 X's a year. I've seen 6 cows, one dog, & one human. Then towards Great Basin there is the Leyland (possibly Yelland) Dry Lake bed. It is a meteorite strewn field. My spelling may be wrong on the name but again, goggle "meteorite fields, Nevada." You should find it. I'm sorry but my time is very limited. I am working from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. I haven't gotten out as much as I should so I cannot tell you stories regarding fantastic finds. Take the dirt road up behind the Ely courthouse. There are tons of glass shards dating to 1900. I've found more cool stuff by sight than with the detector. I haven't ever been bothered up there. Hoof it down one of the ravines. There was a lot of activity up there around 1908.
Hope this helps.

Mines and Minerals of Neveada is a great refrence book available from the Nevada State Geology dept/Mines & Minerals. Many book sellers also. Not expensive and very concise-John
