I don't know if I should post this here. I preferred when this forum was brand specific but brand WXXXXX seems to have left the building or vice versa. I hope this will be the place to continue posting about brand WXXXXX detectors and finds.

So anyway. I went back again to the same old place which yielded a 1920 large cent, a silver dime and a few relics. This time, no silver, no relics, some clad and much trash. My second target got me a large penny from the 19th century. I know that when I see the face of Queen Victoria, it's an oldie. I'm sure there are more great things to find there but the modern trash on top makes it difficult. For me that's half the fun. I've been asked before if the MX7 was good for Canadian clad and I would say yes. Apart from the steel core clad in the picture, I also found about a half dozen nickels and a dozen pennies some of which were the evil kind (not made of copper). On those coins, the MX7 ID will jump wildly like any other detector I have used but it will mainly stay in the MISC category. A steel core dime or quarter will almost never go into the iron range. These observations are with the concentric coils (950 and six shooter).

I know that while we might not get that much snow where I live in far Eastern Oregon, we will get down into those bitter cold temperatures that makes us shut-ins during the wintry months so I need to take advantage of a coming week pleasant sunny days and get out. I'm hoping to get access to a lot where they demolished a house a while back and I'm loaded up to work it if I get permission tomorrow. A friend lives a few doors north and her house was built in 1910, and a couple of other homes close by date from 1907 to 1912 so there's a chance I might pluck a few older-date coins myself.

My vehicle is loaded with a Nokta-Makro FORS CoRe, Teknetics Omega 8000, Tesoro Bandido II [size=small]micro[/size]MAX, a White's XLT for some open-area fringes and my MX-7 to let me cover the site well with a variety of proven performers in my Detector Outfit. That way I can have some fun, try to find some oldies like you did, and do a little 'Main Comparison Detecting Forum' field work. Honestly, I enjoy working some dedicated size and access places like this because I do work and re-work an area just to compare differences in audio and Discrimination performance behavior between different models and search coils. It's educational and I always like learning more.

Great finds! Looks like your knocking them dead with the MX7. Which coil do you use the most, the 950 or the six shooter? I have both also, but just had the six shooter a couple of weeks, it is off on TID a little and I am going to send it in for tuning shortly. HH

Hi cal.

I like both coils. I prefer the six shooter in most situations. It doesn't cover as much ground of course but the MX7 feels weightless and balanced to perfection with that coil on it. I find I don't lose too much depth to the 950 as well. My six shooter is also off on the TID. It reports quarters as dimes and dimes as copper pennies. I remember seeing a statement from Whites about that issue. I'm not sure if it was on findmall but a rep from Whites said it was an easy fix without specifying how they fix it. I might send it in when the winter sets in but honestly, it's not really a problem since the difference in the target ID number is equivalent to a numerical value of 3 below what the actual target ID should be. Since I dig just about everything above iron with it, it has not been an issue. It could be an issue for those who do coin shooting exclusively.

I'm enjoying the MX7 but there is room for improvement. The constant falsing in coin and jewelry and hi trash mode is really an issue. At least for me it is. It beeps or double beeps (and then goes silent) where other detectors just stay silent. It's a lot worse in trashy areas or heavily mineralized soil. I find I have to move slowly with the MX7 and double and triple check my targets. The plus side to this is that if I get a double beep in at least 2 directions that never fades I can be sure that there is something there. If the target ID doesn't fluctuate too much, it's almost always a good target. It pinpoints like nothing I have ever used and I find this addictive. It means small plugs and target in the middle all the time. No need for X patterns ever, no fuss. I find the detector very deep as well even with the sensitivity at 5 or 6. I keep thinking that if Whites could fix the falsing to some degree without sacrificing depth, it could become my favorite detector. When I prefer a more relaxed hunt, I just pick up my F19. These are really at opposite ends when it comes to general stability.

Hi dfmike, I too tend to like the 6 shooter for most of my hunting applications. I did call Whites East Electronics in Virginia about my six shooter coil today doing the same thing as yours. The tech said send it in and I mailed it this afternoon. He is going to check it out and mail me a new one if need be plus check the new one out with a MX7 detector to make sure it works. I am mainly a dry land jewelry hunter and will be hunting some sports fields and other open spaces for the next month or so. I 'm not having the falsing trouble that you have described but as a whole my ground is moderate mineralization. I have used a Omega v4, Xterra 705,and a BH Land Star( sorta a like a BH Discovery) in the past. I now have a TEK Patriot and a Mojave to go with the MX7. HH

Did you test your Patriot head to head against the MX7 regarding depth and ID ? I'd be curious to know the outcome. I have been wanting to try a mid frequency Fisher/Tek for the longest time.
