When You Go Out For A Hunt, Do You Take Another Detector Along?

I usually take a spare along for 2 reasons.

1) The other has a different size coil for different applications

2) In case I run into technical problems. It's always nice to have a backup.

Never go out detecting without a minimum of 2 detectors even if its just to one of my local permissions,if its say a all day detecting session and after usually doing my homework on the location then i can take 3 or even more detectors with me and a selection of coils as well.

A few reason why !!! if i have travelled some distance and on firing up the 'main' detector it is showing a problem for what ever reason this could be say battery issues with the Deus or anything else electronic wise then i can use one of the backup machines rather than travel some distance home to get a replacement one, also sites conditions and targets can vary by a massive margin and as a general rule no one machine or coil combination does it all,the site could be very trashy like most saxon/roman sites are,so a machine with a small coil will be the best weapon of choice, deep pasture or rolled and ploughed would require a detector with a bigger coil on to gain the extra depth.

Also if a friend or someone new would like to try detecting then a spare machine can also help promote the hobby/pastime,prehaps the land owner would like to try and give it a go,this then would give you a feather in your cap and possibly help you in additional land.

Always take a small selection of coils along with me as well, once again different sites require different tactics and either a smaller or larger coil to get the best out of that permission.Another thing i carry with me is a basic essential kit like spare batteries for detector and pinpointer, spare set of headphones and coil bolts just incase anything goes wrong and it usually does when you dont carry a few essential spares or another detector.

It may seem like alot of hassle but in all the years that i have been detecting have never been caught out and unable to detect yet, better be safe than sorry as the old saying goes.

I used to take a spare..But realized I was always wondering if I was using the right detector..what was I missing so to say. I started hunting with just one at a time, and then settled on one detector. I started to do much better after that decision was made......

2 minimum or all three. I also have a cadre of coils , each on their own lower rod so changing is quick and easy.

I always have 2 tectors with me. You just never know if one might go goofy on you.. KEN

do the same as you .

Pack 2 along if any real distance. Even local most times also. Partly habit but it's a comfort in case of one fails. The only real reason...backup and there as a loaner.

Usually bring 2 with a couple exceptions.

In a sketchy area when I'm going to be out of eyeshot of my beater and I don't want to leave anything of value in it.

Also on a hot summer day when I don't want to leave a detector in a closed up vehicle.

I'll add this to my list also.

if I am learning a new detector its the only one that comes and that happens many times.. as in only the one I am learning comes with me.....

If you leave the extra detector in the trunk it should be safe from theft and the heat doesn't hurt anything in the trunk.

I take always two machines with me. At a new location I usually go with the Deus with the large coil first and kinda survey the location. Then I follow with the CTX. On a permission I am familliar with it is the CTX followed by the GPX.

Good idea if on a long trip....also backup headphones....main reason if one breaks down....like the one rifle post as its true....

I generally drive for up to two hours to reach the site I'm detecting on so it makes sense to have more than one detector. My two are the Nexus MP and Minelab GPX-5000.
