When to dig?

Hi guys, just curious, do you guys have a certain # that you wait for to dig? In other words, a good strong signal in the 30's or 40's do you dig them? Or pass them by? I'm pretty new to this hobby with my AT Pro, which I love. I have come across many strong signals that read in the 30's or 40's, should I dig them? Any advice you can give me would be great.
Thanks, Mike

I would recommend digging everything until you learn the machine and what each signal reads to you. Every one can tell you different VDI numbers mean different things, but until you hear and see it for yourself on you own machine, you may pass up good targets by going off someone else numbers on their machine.

Start by Placing your machine on a table, turn it on (if the machine is chattering reduce sensitivity) and scan coins (one at a time) by the coil and note the # readout. If you own any jewelry (rings, necklaces, etc) again, scan them by the coil and note the # readout. Lastly take a nail, bottle top, pulltab scan them and note their readout. This will give you a general start for targets. However to master this machine (or any other machine) you have to spend plenty of quality time in the field (and as jeepster mentions) 'listen, retrieve item and learn" what the machine is telling you. With time in the field you will start to learn the difference (in audio) between good & bad targets. When in doubt, dig it up. Then you will "pair" that audio with the item. Then get back to me on digging signals that register in the 30's and 40's and tell me what you have learned.

One last thing: a TID number is just that and there are many items that may give you the same # but one may be total junk (a small piece of copper wire) and one may be a 1930 wheat cent. Both have smooth sounding audio, both give a TID of say 80 that means you will just be digging junk like the rest of us.
See picture for reference  I'm tired and turning in.

You will be just fine. More people will stop in and give you tips on the machine.

Great advice Earthlypotluck. I am getting to know the machine. I have not got to go out as much as I would like to but that will come. I was detecting in my front yard the other day and had a spot that I could get a 90 to come up but could never really pinpoint where exactly it was coming from. There was some other noise on the machine but then it would chirp a 90, even went to 100 once, but couldn't pinpoint where to dig? Any advice on something like that?

Not trying to be a smart alec , but lots of information right in the owners manual....you just have to read it. Also the youtube videos help a lot.

Mike -

Please, call me Jim. I have learned when the TID jumps up into the 90's and I am unable to pinpoint, it is usually iron falsing. I then slowly move the coil to see if I can pinpoint the object nearby. Sometimes where I receive the high tone is not where the object actually is. When this happens, I usually end up recovering a piece of iron. In a nutshell, I have learned that fading high tone signals that kind of "bleed out" are always iron for me.

Not sure on the other noises you mention because you don't specify what they are. However IF you are hearing low grunts you are most likely over iron. Receiving an intermittent high chirp with grunts in the low tone range indicates iron is present. That high chirp you are hearing can be from too much sensitivity or it actually is a non-ferrous item. If you pinpoint right where you hear the high chirp and you don't find anything.... again, a very good chance you are over iron. hard to say, I wasn't present for your situation. My 2 cents - try to isolate that high tone by running baby sweeps across where you are picking up the signal. IF you can manage to get a decent repeatable signal....DIG! If you try to isolate the high tone and it just kinds of "bleeds out" you are over iron. Keep practicing in your yard and eventually things will start to "click" for you as you associate tones with what you are recovering.

Lots of good advice here. Just listen, dig, learn and repeat. I've probably got close to 200 hours on my ATPro since I got it in March, and I'm still learning. I expect the learning will continue all year. The good news is that it's a lot of fun predicting based off of past experience and seeing if you're getting it right.

Thanks for the advice. That's why I post questions, to Learn. I have watched all the Garrett videos put out by the factory. They were excellent. I bought a whites detector for my Mother, and there is hardly any training material on line. They are missing the boat. I will stick with Garrett from here on out. I probably need to watch the videos again. Plus for about a year I have been watching YouTube videos while I saved up for my detector. I love watching "Nuggettnoggin".
Thanks again for the help.

Mike, pretty much same thoughts here with when to dig...i am like you and although ive been detecting for a very long time, it was a new ball game since i got my at pro last xmas...learning curve! For one, i wasn't used to a dd coil, pinpointings a little diff. Than the years with concentric coils..but im getting better at that......with whats already been said as for digging...i just simply dug bout anything that repeated , or stays close to any certain numbers....just to see "what the heck is that???lol!

I did run into a few of those "90" n above signals few times too...only to find a large iron target. Or like in my front yard ...one that i have yet to find...

Kind of a "fooled ya" signal ....in the 90's....small pin point. (Until i raise the standard 8.x11dd coil im using ...)and can still get a pin point ten inches above the ground.....so probably a laaaarge iron target more than a foot down...

Those #30's thru #40 you mention.....well, since i do NOT want to miss any sort of ring...unfotunatly...i dig them anyway....just incase
Most of the.time it is a ball of alum. Foil or smthing similar....some of those pesky lil alum siding "trimmings" from an alum. Sided house (like mine, of curse...or of course!!) been falling in the #40 to #45 range....again i dont want to miss any rings or gold ....so i dig ....dig .....dig.....and dig some more...

So you seem to be thinking and doing the right thing....just dig all those numbers, like myself, and if you think twice about it...just dig it!

On a last note...about doubting a signal
Couple months ago.......i was a a local park...not really finding much...few older wheats ..n new coins...and those #:$@"!#_ zincolins...
That. USUALLY give # somewhere in between a 65 to a 69,maybe 70 ish.....at two inches deep...

Was getting kinda burnt on digging them....and i had yet another signal just like that 8 feet from a side walk in the park and 15 feet from my truck....n i thought......man.....another zincolin.........walked away from it....stopped....went back to it...
.....Alright....Ill dig the thing.........yeah.....it turned out to be an 1867 TWO CENT PIECE!!
Just some food for thought... HH........keep digging!!

....almost forgot......if ya get a #90's ish signal that your not sure about.....turn on that IRON AUDIO....n listen to it again....u may turn DOWN. Ur sensativity some when you listen to the target if it is up high......i have been using that feature alot more and it really can pick out those good targets amongst the iron
Tinker with that when ya get those wierd ...hard or no pin point 90's. Iffys....you will see what i mean...
That was some great advise handed to me by a few good folks out here...it helps alot
HH

Great advice. Thanks very much. Can't wait to get out again. Been real hot here so the dirt is getting hard. Need some more rain.
