When to change my Vaquero

Tesoro recommend changing the battery in my Vaquero when it gets down to a battery check of 1 or 2 beeps!

This doesn't sound like a lot of power left, don

I change the battery when it starts to have 2 beeps in my Silver uMax. I have never seen any reduction in performance. The circuit is powered through a regulator with the exception of the transmitter/coil. So you might get some slight reduction in transmitted power which does not have to equal to reduced performance. I get 3 - 4 beeps with rechargeable batteries 90 % of the operating time. If Tesoro says "change your battery at 2 beeps", they know what they are saying as they have designed the battery check circuit

Many thanks for the advice, latest battery seems to be hanging on at 5 beeps for ages now, did another couple of hours this morning, still 5 beeps!

If its like the cibola, it really caught me off guard, the detector started chattering like crazy, I really though something was wrong. But then I turned it on and back on and it hardly beeped. Just carry a spare and it will let you know when it ready?

I change mine everyday and never worrying about getting low performance from a weak battery. I use 9.6 volt rechargeable batteries. They run at full power for the entire hunt. However, the voltage will fall off sharply after about 10-12 hours of use, so I make sure that they're at full charge before each hunt.:)

I'm just worried that I would miss a target with a low battery and that IMHO is a very weak reason,,, so just to be sure I change mine out at 4 beeps,,,,i agree Tesoro knows best but they may be a LITTLE more worried about advertised battery life,,,, when I am more concerned with getting OPTIMUM performance during my time that I hunt,,, remember this hobby is allot to do with your mental state as you hunt,,,, and it is worth throwing good batteries away to me to know I'm not losing targets cus I want the last ounce of power from the bats,,,, that's just how I role

Well, I've said several times that if battery life becomes a problem, than I'm happy. That means I've been detecting a bunch.

Well finally changed out the battery at 3 beeps, did a few depth tests and small target tests, there really didn't seem to be much difference if any to a new battery and by the time I was finished with the tests, the Vaq was giving 2 beeps and still stable. So dropped in a new battery did the tests again, all seemed the same as a 3/2 beep battery.

It was a Duracell Procell and lasted roughly 12/14 hours, 100% headphones and no super tuning, quite pleased with that.

I haven't taken notes to keep track of actual total hours, but using headphones and good quality alkaline batteries I have to say that hunts of a couple hours here, couple hours there, I get good, long battery life with no complaints.
