When purchasing a detector........

which is the best/safest way to send payment for it---bank cashiers check---or USPS money order?

Hi,
Use PayPal.
If the seller insists, pay his fees - usually 3%.
This way your bank account details are hidden - who knows what kind of person your dealing with.
After all he will also have your name and adress to send the detector to you.
Kind of leaves you wide open for all kinds of mischief.
Just my opinion

I will use a postal money order or a bank money order. Either one is the best. Some times if I buy a detector or something from a forum member, I will ask if I can send them a money gram. They get there money in 10 minutes. I don't have pay pal... KEN

To me PayPal is the best, If something happens that you get the wrong item, or broken when you get it, or even lost in the mail. Paypal will hold your money till it is taken care of. Paypal know when the item was shipped. I payed for a item, and three days later got a note from Paypal that it had not been shipped yet and they still had my money and if the seller did not ship in 7 days i would get my money back. I have gotten detectors that didn,t work right, and the seller would not send my money back, just get paypal ( IF YOU PAYED THE 3% ) and they will get your money back. Paypal is the only way to go to keep buyer and seller safe. If you sell a detector, you don,t ship till you have the money in your account, that is done in no time.

To me it depends on where I am purchasing the detector, private party, on-line detector dealer, e-bay, etc.

In my town and most towns.. WaMart .. Just go to the costomer service. They have the paper to fill out. You need the reciving persons name,, address state and town. Phone # Than your info.. It will cost around $10.00 to send. They can get it at any place in their state that has money gram. I think all WaMart stores has that. I use that also to send money to the Philippines.. They will get it in 10 minutes. I hope this helps a little.. I for got. When you send it they will show you the control number.. You will need to call your contact person and give them this # .. and they will be able to get the money.. I always have them call me as soon as they get it. Just to make sure they get it. I have messed up sending, But WaMart was able to get it fixed... KEN

Of course not everyone has a Wal-Mart .... Still might be better than mailing or Shipping Via Fed X

While Usps money orders are pretty safe as are other ways.....I think Flintstone has the best way on a doing a transaction. As said, you have some protection one way or the other and someone to make sure the transaction goes right.

There are so many ways to get ripped off if you are not careful and remember banks etc ALWAYS protect themselves first. I have saying, " I dont believe Im paid till I have the cash in my hand"..............unless Im dealing with Del, Elton and others...then its guaranteed!

I use Paypal and I'm glad I do. Let me tell you little story that happened to me back in October.

I bought a Deleon off of a guy from another forum. It should have been an easy transaction as it was all within my own Province. No duties, taxes, customs etc. Like I have to deal with when purchasing from the USA. That was one of the deciding factors to closing this deal. Anyway, he was going to ship it with 3 to 5 day delivery. After about 10 days still nothing at my door. So I contact him and he gets back to me a couple days later saying how UPS screwed up. Now he was going to ship it overnight using Canada Post. Three days later still nothing. So I contact him again. Two or three days later he gets back to me and says Canada Post screwed up too. He was going to get down to the post office and straighten it out. A week later still nothing. So I email him back. Now he's not responding at all. So I started a claim through PayPal on the 30th day. That process forces him to respond at which point I get another story about how the post office screwed up again. He wants to ship it overnight. All he was trying to do was eat up the 45 day grace period. I was able to get my money back through PayPal without any problem.

I will continue to use Paypal because of the protection it ensures.

I think the best/safest payment option is probably the one you have had work okay for you. I had a problem with a paypal account one time that paypal corrected instantly, i had a bad personal banking experience once in which my bank fixed eventually. From this date to eternity I wouldn't use usps with anything outside mailing christmas cards to people i really don't like.:) I'm not sure there is anything foolproof, so i would say use what you have had the most success with?

Well, I learned something right there--I didn't know that.----Can those money grams be purchased at the post office for amounts over $1,000 & can the person receiving the money gram pick them up & cash them at the post office?----Thanks for that info Ken.

I also don't use paypal and use Postal money orders from usps . A few faults of the money order are you have to mail it and wait for it to get there before the seller try's to mail out your item being bought . Another problem I ran into is I lived in a small town ( less than 10,000 people ) and if you try to cash a money order early or even sometimes later in the day the small post offices don't have enough cash on hand to cash them right away . So I usually take mine to my bank and depoist it to my checking account . Might add with the postal Money order the post office can check the money order and let you know right away if its good or a fake before you deposit it in your account , if it is a fake Postal Money it would be a federal offense ..

Agreed! mostly......

Usps HAS had instances of people counterfeiting their money orders....and MOST of time....Usps usually knows when the money order is bogus BUT not 100 percent of the time. Many postal employees are not trained well enough to KNOW for sure if something is legit or not. If its a small sale from someone I dont know...it might be worth the risk. On a large sale....from someone I dont know...if Usps cant cash it....I would not ship until the bank gives final ok......it could be 10 days to 2 weeks.
