When one door closes...

Another door opens!!! Here is a little story of my last few days of detecting:

I got permission from the owners of an amazing old farmhouse, built in 1904, and never hunted. I arrived a few days later and double checked on the permission. Again they said sure.I proceeded to hunt and found a bunch of clad. Nothing too interesting. After about an hour I found a 1960 silver dime. Finally things were looking up! As I put the coin into my pocket and carefully filled the hole, I noticed the Mrs. coming my way. She said that one of her sons (didn't know anything about this guy detecting the yard) was upset and wanted me to stop. She felt awkward, as did I. I apologized and offered her the coins I had found. She said "no, no, they're yours", so I packed up and headed home.

Needless to say, I was bummed. I decided to hit one of the old boulevards near home to try my luck. A woman and her grandson saw me and came over. The little boy was curious, so they watched me dig...happened to be junk. She said "you should do around that old house over there, my husband owns it" The house is empty, in fair shape, and is from the 1890's, so I was excited to hunt it. I said if he wouldn't mind, I would love to. They left and I continued on the boulevard. They returned 5 minutes later and said "its fine if you detect the old place...do it right now, we want to watch!". I soon found a penny in the front yard (1989), and gave it to the little boy. He was happy, and they left me to hunt in solitude.

It wasn't long before I found a wheat, then a silver dime (1943). This site is great! I continued to find 5 more wheats, 8 Canadian pennies from the 40's, and a 1921 silver Canadian quarter! Then it happened. I've been detecting for just over 3 months, and have been anxiously waiting to break the 1900 barrier. I got a strong signal, 3 inches deep. Indian head penny...1879!!! I nearly passed out, it was awesome to find that penny! The best part is that I still have 70% of that yard to hunt. Maybe tomorrow.....

My camera is being difficult, I'm sorry I don't have pics...I will try to put some up when I can.

Starting with a nice Indian Head cent is a great way to start in the 18's. Always a rush when one of them finds its way to the surface. Good luck with the site. Hope your good fortune continues.

:usaflag:That is a day to remember....way to go. An 1879 IHP is definately above average in worth compared to most other dates. Congrats !

Thanks guys, I'm pretty pumped about that coin. I wrote in another thread that in a clump of 4 coins I found yesterday, one of them is an 1890. Now that makes 2 from the 1800's. Even if I find nothing for the rest of the season, I am satisfied!
