When is a nickel not a nickel?

I went to a local practice football field for about an hour on Friday with the AT Pro. We've had a lot of rain recently so the digging was as good as it gets. I was hunting in Pro Custom with the low 35 and 70-75 notched out. (I'm trying not to find so many Zincolns but they still pop up.) I was getting the usual assortment of clad and finding quite a few nickels. Usually they ring in at a solid 52 but for some reason they were jumping from 52-56 on Friday. After about 45 minutes I got another hit on a 52-56 target and said to myself, "Another nickel.", when I suddenly saw the lovely sheen of gold in the hole. It was a 14K man's wedding band. That was a pleasant surprise. My 14K wedding band which looks the same as the one I found comes in at 66. Gotta love those mid-tones!

Togamac, GOOD FIND!!! I haven't been notching anything out, but have noticed a few things. The numbers do seem to be a little different on any given day. Some times a nickel will be 50-53, other days it will be 47-50. It might not be the day, but the location. Also, i try to not dig many Zincolns, seems like most are so eaten up, they cant be reused anyway. But, i have noticed that a lot of good targets are in the 70s. Tokens being one nice find. Seems like there isn't a "for sure" thing. Still lots of fun. HH, Larry

A couple of weeks ago I got a call from a guy who lost his ring on July 4th. Took my friend along with me to find the ring and on his third swing with his CZ-21 he
found the ring in about 6 inches of water.
I checked it with my At-Pro and it read a solid 53. Ring was a white gold men's wedding band.
Everybody was happy including a couple of old MDer's.

I would hate to see a nice 14K gold ring slip by without a nice photo. Congrats.....hope you get more gold.

Thats a beauty! i'm gonna try that notch zinc thing...will you still hit a mens class ring with zinc notched? I know the tids are about the same, but is the signal different enough to bleed through??

Great story! Congrats!

Funny tones can be a funny find, for sure. About a month ago I decided to hear the tones again in a field so I took the ACE out. I got this one strange repeatable tone, well strange compared to what I was hearing that day. It turned out to be a zinc 1940 Nazi third reich 5 fenig coin, swastika, eagle, the whole deal. Very strange. I guess that I guy never really knows until you pop out those strange ones.

Thanks for sharing. I am fairly new at this but I sure do love it. I have yet to find a gold ring but have found my share of nickels and pull tabs so I figure it is only a matter of time. I just purchased an AT Pro and am waiting for it to be delivered on Thursday (I hope). Can't wait to take it out. I currently use an Ace 250 and have done fairly well but I believe the AT Pro is much better.
