When is a marble not a marble?

Last Sunday got out for about 4 hours to a beach that had a sliver of upper beach not covered in snow and an adjoining sliver of land. Being familiar with the lay of the land I knew this was a high iron trash landscape. So the uniform of the day was the X70 with 6 inch HF DD.

About half way through the hunt the X70 sounded and out of the sand came a marble. I thought "that's odd", and picking it up it didn't seem very heavy. But I put it in my pouch and carried on as marbles aren't very interesting. It's pictured on the left below. When I arrived home I discovered it's plastic, hollow, and shaking caused a rattling sound. Turns out there is a magnet inside of it......I'm still scratching my head.

Also pictured below is a drawer pull ornament and a couple of interesting targets. The Case pocket knife at the top was found at 12+ inches, I'm guessing 15 inches because I was using a full sized spade shovel. This was an interesting mixed tone target with the higher tone being very smooth, despite having an iron low tone companion. Likewise the bent square nail was interesting as I ran into a big patch of them with the one pictured laying on top of the sand. Swinging the coil in this area produced a machine fire sound of low grunts but the little HF DD never once falsed high or medium tone on this nail patch.

A couple of damaged buckles were found with the bottom one being WW1 vintage, as can be seen in the link.

Lots of lead seals which are common at this location were found as seen below, along with small bits of copper. There was also a wannabe ring(costume).

One of the nicer finds was in a 10x10ft area I have just hammered over the years with all sorts of detectors, and yet it still continues to produce if you go slow and grid it from three angles. This jar was only about three inches below the surface and was isolated by just a slight wiggling of the coil. Any more coil movement and it reported iron. This could be the poster child for how much masking iron is causing. Turns out the corrosion ate any markings on the lid, and the glass itself has none. This is one find I am still having the mumbles about, how could a target with such a large non-ferrous signature have been missed?

Coins of interest found Wheaties, 1909(no SVDB:rage:),1917, and a badly corroded. A 1927 Buff and 1947 Jeff. Along with a silver pendant with an Aztec/Mayan pyramid design.

You really did a number on that location you detected on. People will come by and think it's virgin ground now that you've cleaned it up!
I especially like what appears to be a tube of oil paint. Is it a scenic area that would inspire artists?

I really like the buckles! Very nice finds indeed. The marble is interesting in that it has a magnet in it. Maybe it is a float switch. A stopper so to speak to block a round hole?

I have found those tubes in many places. Some seem to be old paint tubes. Others tooth paste, or denture adhesive? I dunno, but they sure sound good.

Congrats on a very nice hunt, Beale.

you take it for granite!

Just had to put that in! Nice finds Bill. Good of you to show the "junk" stuff as well as the goodies. I've not done that as much as I should, and sometimes wonder if not doing so distorts the "success rate" for time in the field? Good post. HH Randy

the tubes are most likely nothing so highbrow. This is a location on a very clean freshwater lake, so the tubes would probably be shampoo, hair cream, or toothpaste......yes people would use lake water to brush their teeth. I dig many of these tubes and the screw on tops that make me crazy.

The very top picture you have a decorative piece of metal... I found one just like that only it had split in the middle.... wonder how old it is and what it come off of..

Nice post Bill. Interesting comment about wiggling the coil. Sounds like a good spot for the small coil to excell.

Yeah. that might work. Do ya think that you can fit that coil to your detector though? I reckon that it would look quite attractive on the 70.
