Hey all, My name is Andrew and I'm new to the forum here. Had my mxt for about 2 months now and like the rest of you, I love it. Great machine.
A guy I used to work for is building a couple new houses on the site of a couple old houses that were recently torn down. He called the other day to ask if I'd give him a hand setting some forms for the new footings. I said "sure, if I can bring my mxt and go over the place". He had no problem with this so today I went and helped him out.
When we were done there was about an hour of sunlight left so I broke out the mxt with the 1400 DD and got to work. Hit some newer shallow pennies and some iffy signals and some for sure trash. I then started to pay closer attention to those iffy signals. I got a reading as a penny but only 1 bar. from another angle it didn't register but i could still hear it. So I dig. 36 wheatie. Then, another faint signal that said penny but showed 8" deep on the meter. 1940 wheatie. Then the nice one. Weak 1c-10c sig. Side to side it would change to pull tab, quarter and other things, but never came up as iron. When I pinpointed it it said 7". I knew from x-ing it out it was small. I had already dug some small pieces of aluminum and stuff that registered as quarters so I wasn't sure. What the heck, I dug. Out comes a 1945 s mercury dime in just about as good of condition as a guy could hope for. I only searched about 150 sq ft of this place and found 3 wheaties and the dime and all were deep and weak signals that were kinda iffy on the meter. I still have about 3,000 sq ft to go.
When i go back I'm going to use the shooter 4x6 because I was getting multiple targets under the big coil. Then again since I would maybe get better depth with the 1400, I may just use that and dig it all. I'm going to hit this place with everything I have untill there are no signals left.
Oh yeah, for good measure I also found a silver spoon. Think it might be plated though.
So. If you get to an old homesite or any old site and you get weak, deep, changing signals that you are really unsure of, dig them. Especially if they are right on the limits of the detectors depth where they barely, or do not give a vdi reading. The good stuff is usually the deep stuff. HH Andrew
P.S. I am attempting to attach pics. My first time doing so on here so we'll see how it goes. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">
