When iffy signals is all you have

Went hunting at lunch today. I started with the Deep Silver program with Mixed Mode audio but there was so much iron and trash in the ground that the All Metal signal sounded like a badly tuned ambulance. So after switching to the C&J program, I got a signal among trash that went from 70 through 80 and back. The signal was not pretty! Because the accepted VDIs were there enough and because the dominant frequency was 2.5kHz, I decided to dig. At just about 5 inches deep, I dug up this 1887 Indian Head. I've dug up a few of these in the last couple of weeks and all of them had 7.5kHz as the dominant frequency. Odd. My C&J program is the standard stock program with the Sensitivity turned up (Rx=12, AM=75, Disc=92) and +95 rejected.

All sounds good to me. I'm sure there was more than one target being read at the same time. The all metal of the MM told you there was a lot of trash. In trash I would be running a faster RD, moving slow, and just wiggling the coil over the target for the best signal. Besides IH cents don't all read the same, they vary with year.

Also unless you are running in one of the mixed modes, all metal mode or just trying to PP deeper all metal really has no affect.

Hi Rob: read ur last comment and if I get it....pp isn't effective when u see these mixed vdi's.The all metal won't get u there but try to pp
with the fast rd and a wiggle over the best vdi signal.I cant tell u how many times I bypass this scenario, when I see red on the spec I assume ferrous, with who knows what conductve alloy in there.Boy do I feel dumb.......jack from penna

Thank you Rob! Yes, this is definitely a time when a faster RD will help.
